Counterfeit Titanium Found In Some Boeing And Airbus Jets

Boeing is no longer the pride of American aviation. The plane manufacturer is riddled with so many problems it’s impossible to keep track. Yesterday, the FAA announced an investigation (yet another…) into a 737 Max 8 jet that encountered a dangerous mid-flight ‘Dutch roll’ several weeks ago. Now, a report from the New York Times reveals that some Boeing jets are built with ‘counterfeit titanium.’

Some recently manufactured Boeing and Airbus jets have components made from titanium that was sold using fake documentation verifying the material’s authenticity, according to a supplier for the plane makers, raising concerns about the structural integrity of those airliners.
The falsified documents are being investigated by Spirit AeroSystems, which supplies fuselages for Boeing and wings for Airbus, as well as the Federal Aviation Administration. The investigation comes after a parts supplier found small holes in the material from corrosion. -NYT

Counterproductive’: Biden Energy Dep’t Hit With Lawsuit After Cracking Down On Appliances Used By Millions

A pro-free market organization is taking the Biden administration to court in an effort to block government rules targeting a bevy of appliances used by millions of Americans.
The Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI) filed a lawsuit against the Department of Energy (DOE) on Thursday seeking injunctive and declaratory relief against the DOE’s water efficiency standards for clothes washers and dishwashers. In its complaint, CEI alleges that the agency exceeded its authority by issuing the efficiency rules, which CEI describes as “counterproductive” and bad for consumers.
“DOE has gone beyond its statutory authority in increasing the stringency of water efficiency rules of certain consumer appliances without lawful authority,” CEI’s complaint states. “More precisely, DOE lacks the authority to increase the stringency of such rules for appliances other than showerheads, faucets, water closets, and urinals. This lawsuit seeks to confine the actions of the DOE to the exercise of its lawful statutory authority.

Trump floats cutting corporate tax rate in meeting with CEOs

Former President Trump floated further cuts to the corporate tax rate during a Business Roundtable event Thursday with some of the country’s most powerful executives, according to a source in attendance.The former president delivered his pitch shortly after White House chief of staff Jeff Zients also sat for an interview before the CEOs. President Biden was also invited to attend, Business Roundtable said last week, but the president is currently in Italy for the Group of Seven summit.Trump was interviewed by Fox Business host Larry Kudlow, who directed the National Economic Council under the former president, and Zients was interviewed by Comcast CEO Brian Roberts, per another person familiar with the meeting.
The 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, Trump’s signature tax bill, lowered the corporate tax rate to 21 percent, among other changes. The former president said he wants to make all “Trump tax cuts” permanent and bring the corporate tax rate down to 20 percent, Jason Miller, a Trump campaign spokesperson, told The Hill.

Federal Judge Blocks ATF Rule Expanding Definition Of Gun Dealer

A federal judge in Texas has blocked the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) from implementing its new rule, which critics say dramatically expands the agency’s enforcement scope by redefining who is a gun dealer.
In his opinion handed down June 11, U.S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk for the Northern District of Texas said the enforcement of the new rule relies on “highly problematic” presumptions that will “trigger civil or criminal penalties for conduct deemed lawful just yesterday.”
The rule in question was unveiled in April as part of President Joe Biden’s effort to close what he called “loopholes” in the federal gun background check system.

U.S. District Judge Vacates ATF’s AR Pistol Brace Rule

On June 13, 2024, U.S. District Judge Reed O’Connor vacated the ATF’s AR pistol brace rule, noting that it violated the Administrative Procedure Act (APA).
The ATF pistol brace rule targets stabilizer braces attached to AR pistols, claiming the braces turn AR pistols into short barrel rifles (SBRs). And since SBRs are regulated under the National Firearms Act (1934), the ATF issued its rule on AR-pistol braces to stop what it saw as a way around SBR regulations.
At that time, Kacsmaryk noted that the “court is not insensitive to the ATF’s concerns over gun industry gamesmanship and attempts to circumvent the rules on SBRs.” But he followed that acknowledgement by quoting Bruen (2022), noting that the government may not justify the passage and/or existence of a regulation by “simply [positing] that the regulation promotes an important interest.”
On June 13, 2024, Judge O’Connor vacated the entire rule on the grounds that it violates “APA procedural requirements.”

In a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court has found that the federal government cannot use a decades-old ban on machine guns to ban bump stocks.
“Semiautomatic firearms, which require shooters to reengage the trigger for every shot, are not machineguns. This case asks whether a bump stock—an accessory for a semiautomatic rifle that allows the shooter to rapidly reengage the trigger (and therefore achieve a high rate of fire)—converts the rifle into a ‘machinegun.’ We hold that it does not,” wrote Justice Clarence Thomas.

BREAKING: Senate Armed Services Committee Proposes Mandatory Draft Registration for Women in FY25 Defense Policy Bill

In May, the FY25 NDAA received strong bipartisan support as it was approved by the House Armed Services Committee (HASC). The vote was overwhelmingly in favor, passing 57 to 1.
On Friday, the House of Representatives approved its version of the bill to automatically register men aged 18 to 26 for selective service.
This automatic draft registration system would replace the existing system from 1980, which allows young men the freedom to decide whether or not to sign up for the draft.
The new legislation was introduced by Rep. Chrissy Houlahan (D-Pa.), a former Air Force officer, and was endorsed by HASC Chair Mike Rogers (R-Ala.).

According to the proposal, “Amends the Military Selective Service Act to require the registration of women for Selective Service.”

Committee approval is the first step in a months-long process to establish defense funding levels and set policies for the Defense Department and the Energy Department’s national security programs. The bill must now be debated and voted on by the full U.S. Senate. A separate measure will make its way through the U.S. House of Representatives.
Once both the Senate and House pass their versions of the bill, they must then be reconciled in a bicameral conference committee, and then approved by each chamber before a final version may be sent to the President to be signed into law.

On Tuesday, the Senate passed a defense authorization bill that would require young women to register for the draft — the latest development in a long-running debate over whether women should sign up for the Selective Service. The provision would apply to women turning 18 in 2018 or later and would impose the same requirements and rules that currently apply to men.
The policy is still far from being law. The House, after considering a similar provision earlier this spring, ultimately passed an authorization bill that omitted it; the two branches of Congress now must resolve the differences between their bills. And the bill faces a veto threat from President Obama over other elements of the legislation, such as the prohibition on closing down the Guantanamo Bay military prison.

US intelligence community aware of more foreign election interference threats

The U.S. intelligence community is keenly tracking foreign maligned influence campaigns ahead of November’s elections.
The number of these foreign influence campaigns that have been flagged is higher now than it was before the 2020 or 2022 elections, an official with the Office of the Director of National Intelligence told reporters on Wednesday.
The official said, “We do consider Russia to be our primary threat for this election,” and described China as taking a “more cautious” approach, while they expect Iran to operate as a “chaos agent.”
The ODNI has an office known as the Foreign Malign Influence Center that deals specifically with foreign threats. This office does not investigate domestic campaigns.
