Castle Falkenstein is a steam-age, Victorian fantasy role playing game that was a cult classic from 1994, originally written by legendary game designer, Mike Pondsmith. The game is getting somewhat of a reboot over at Fat Goblin Games with new supplements and books written by my friend and fellow game designer, James Gray! We will be testing out some "shocking" new fangeled dice mechanics which may upset some Castle Falkenstein purists (only cads and scoundrels play dice), but I think the dice mechanics will definitely bring a new audience to this evocative steam age, Victorian fantasy game. As of the release date of this podcast, the dice mechanics are still being written up and haven't officially been released yet, but they will available soon. Also, we still do make use of the Fortune Deck with poker chips in different colors representing the various suits and determining how many dice you can roll based on your specific ability score. Each player also gets two major arcana cards at the beginning of the session that create dramatic twists and turns in the story (using the Second Tarot Variation: An Alternative Fortune Deck for Castle Falkenstein). This game is set in New Orleans in 1876 and our Dramatic Characters are all members of the Theosophical society, a society heavily involved in Spiritualism, Science, and Philosophy and founded their leader, Helena Blavatsky. The setting involves dark subject matter, such as the murderess Delphine LaLaurie and race relations in the South post-Civil War, so keep that in mind before listening to the podcast.
