The story begins in the vibrant and somewhat seedy district of Montmartre in Paris. Arlette, a stripper at the Picratt Club, overhears a conversation about a planned murder while she is working. Frightened, she goes to the police and reports what she heard to Inspector Maigret. She tells him that two men were discussing the murder of a countess and a young girl. Maigret listens to her but is initially unsure whether to take her seriously.
