×A few jazz digs and tracks this time around, as I continue to get my set-up together. Dig in! Tracklist: Grant Green, Peter Duchin, Los 5-U-4, Les Demerle, Karen Hernandez, John Wood
Been a couple weeks - I had to replace my old desktop that was starting to crash too frequently and move all the music files etc to the new machine. Back up now with an episode I recorded a week or so ago! Just a few longer tracks from recent records found and purchased. Hope to be back on schedule soon! Enjoy. Tracklist: Keifer Trio, Pete Jolly, Chris Barber, Les DeMerle, Airmen of Note.…
I was late to the library game, and only own a short stack of these gems, but for folks unaware, some amazing studio musicians (especially in Europe) recorded some of the funkiest and weirdest music on "library" records, that were available to radio and tv producers to use on their shows or elsewhere. Recently I discovered that one of the iconic sound effects associated with the early days of Portland Trailblazers broadcasts that I used to hear all the time as a kid actually came from a 1970s KPM record. No tracklist on this one! Dig in.…
Went back to the "Jazz 45s" box and pulled a few things out that I hadn't played in awhile. Spring is here and it felt right. A short set of selections, new and old - enjoy! Spent a week on a work and mini-birthday trip, and got some serious digging in at a number of spots, both places I'd been and some I'd never been to before. Some great come-ups and here's just a few of stack I brought back with me! Hope you dig it. Tracklist: Alvin Queen, Oscar Peterson Quartet, Al Hobbs, Howard University Jazz Ensemble, Jasmine, Manfredo Fest Trio, The Great Jazz Trio, Nathan Davis, John Gordon, Henry Franklin, Doug Riley…
It felt important right now to come back to the words and teachings of Howard Zinn, when the U.S. government is causing and propagating so much fear and racism and oppression and just plain meanness, and things seem tilted toward hopelessness. This is the third in my series of mix-tributes to Zinn, and the vocal samples here come from a few great interviews and programs you can find on Youtube, including a great interview Laura Flanders did with the amazing Staceyann Chin and Imani Perry a couple years ago: www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4R3-OyS2ho The beats are from a variety of producers, all vinyl selections from the crates. Finally, in these times, I always turn back to this essay from Zinn: www.howardzinn.org/collection/a-marvelous-victory/ 'What we choose to emphasize in this complex history will determine our lives. If we see only the worst, it destroys our capacity to do something. If we remember those times and places—and there are so many—where people have behaved magnificently, it energizes us to act, and raises at least the possibility of sending this spinning top of a world in a different direction. And if we do act, in however small a way, we don’t have to wait for some grand utopian future. The future is an infinite succession of presents, and to live now as we think human beings should live, in defiance of all that is bad around us, is itself a marvelous victory.'…
Two legends have passed on recently - Roberta Flack and Gwen McCrae, both of whom had records that have been important to me for many years. Unfortunately some of my Roberta Flack records were damaged in a flood years ago, and so I tried to pull a few favorites from what I still have, and mostly less obvious pieces from both artists catalogs.…

Ok, this is a really special one. The amazing artist Josh MacPhee, of JustSeeds.org and many other places, has dug deep into his incredible collection of revolutionary wax and put together an incredible and inspiring mix for Pullin from the Stacks! Everything from funk, free jazz, hard rock, folk, nu-wave and more, from all parts of the globe, all off original wax. Commie Freaks!! (Josh's name but I actually had a high school teacher call me that once lol). Please please follow Josh and check out and support his and other JustSeeds artists' amazing work!! And check out this entire mix - I guarantee there's records on here you've never ever heard before! Tracklist available on Soundcloud.…
I love records. But I love records because I love music. And sometimes, in fact often, great music doesn't get pressed on vinyl. And that's ok! That's why Bandcamp is so great. It's endless in how much great stuff is available there. Here's just a small sampling of the beautiful music I've found that as far as I know, has not been pressed onto vinyl, but is available digitally if you seek it out. Tracklist: Jazzbois, Nautilus, Raffy Bushman, Okonski, Soil Pimp Sessions, Chicago Soul Jazz Collective, Sunstrider…
Some music for these extremely troubled times. Hope everyone is staying as safe and healthy as possible. Tracklist: Adrienne Rich, Dollar Brand, Melvin Sparks, Sly5thAve, Ill Considered, Latarnik, Dezron Douglas and Brandee Younger
Seemed like a good moment to salute the city of LA, a city I never thought I'd end up residing in as a kid but where I now live and don't plan on leaving. A huge city, where horrible fires and climate change have destroyed the homes of thousands of people including some of those featured on this mix. If you are looking to support folks in need, check out: mutualaidla.org/ I recorded this mix live on Twitch, totally unplanned and a bit rough but fun, might try and do that more often this year? We'll see. Thanks as always for tuning in! Tracklist: Elusive ft. Aceyalone, will.i.am, People Under the Stairs, Warren G, Warren G, Vooodu ft. Meen Green, Funkdoobiest ft. Cypress Hill, Kankick, Lootpack, Snoop Dogg, Abstract Tribe Unique, MC Eiht, Pharcyde, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Phoenix Orion, MURS, DJ Quik, Warren G, Alkaholiks, Yo-Yo, Madlib, T-Love ft. Chali2na, Haiku D'Etat, Medusa…
Spent the holidays in Portland with the family, had some good adventures at the record shops and thrift stores - one of these records I pulled out from underneath an old rug at a Goodwill for a dollar. Was fun getting back into the sale bins and antique stores rather than just shopping at the fancy places. Grabbed all of these while on the trip, with one being gifted to me by the homie while there. Now it's a New Year and the other side of Los Angeles is burning up and Trump begins his reign in under two weeks. Hope these tunes bring some type of calm for a few moments in between all the horrible things in the world. Tracklist: Baba Yaga, Bronx River Parkway, Johnny Frigo Sextet, Marva Josie, Ed Bennett, Stanley Cowell, The Piano Choir, the Cosmic Tones Research Trio, Eje Thelin Group…

Ending the year with a number of my favorite purchases this past year. Maybe one or two of these I actually "dug" up somewhere - the Dick Drew Trio was something I pulled out from deep under other record racks in a store in Las Vegas last May, for instance, but I also bought several of these via Discogs. Record collecting continues to change in ways that make it less familiar to me - many records are now status symbols for wealthy people to show off rather than listen to, when previously they were "status" symbols for many of us in terms of our digging commitment or record knowledge. Actual "digging" for records isn't something I've had as much time for, but still what I love. But shout out to the amazing dealers who are out there with the rusty shovels every week, finding these gold nuggets for the rest of us! And huge, huge thank you to all the people tuning into the podcast - you are massively appreciated! Tracklist: Raffy Bushman, Latin Tempo, Sambalanco Trio, Dick Drew Trio, Masaru Imada Trio, Milcho Leviev, Frank Cunimondo Trio, Morning Sky, Jazzbois, Aquila, Johnny Costa, Billy Harper Quintet…
Putting together a mix of my favorite digs this past year, but first, a few more recent finds and classic selections! Tracklist: David Axelrod, Howard Wales, Visioneers, Barbara Carroll, Don Randi, Patrice Rushen
RIP to the legends Lou Donaldson and Roy Haynes, who passed recently. I play a couple of their records on the bookends of this episode. The Lou Donaldson joint that starts things off, a cover of "Everything I Play Gonh Be Funky," reminds of my very early days of digging, finding this at an East Village bookstore in 1997 or so, and always treasuring it. I didn't get hip to Mr. Haynes later on even though I already had some of the hundreds of records that he played on in my collection. In-between, I included some of my recent digs, since it's been a while since I last recorded an episode. Thanks as always to folks tuning in - working on a few things right now, more soon! For now, dig in and go and track down more of these legendary artists' work. Tracklist: Lou Donaldson, Steve Goodman, Luiz Bonfa, Cal Green, Milt Jackson, Jackie McLean, Roy Haynes…

I began the Pullin from the Stacks podcast just over 10 years ago, publishing my first episode on October 19, 2014. The name is from the classic Digable Planets cut "Pacifics," a song which has a lot of meaning to me. I think I actually messed up and called it "Pullin from the Crates" for that first episode. The first record I played was a cover of Herbie Hancock's "Maiden Voyage" by the Jazz Piano Quartet. The first record I play on this episode is a different "Maiden Voyage" cover, this time by the Dalton Jazz Ensemble, a school band record I found at Recollect Records in Denver years ago. One of my favorite songs, I still search out any version I can. The next record is the first record I ever put on my Discogs "want list," Michael Sardaby's "Gail," after hearing a soundclip on Youtube one day. Even back then it was going for more money than I'd ever spent on a piece of wax. A few years later, I sold my old copy of Eminem's first 12" for a couple hundred, and immediately went to see if there were any copies of "Gail" available at the same price - and there were! I feel so lucky to have snagged one. The next record is from one of my favorite jazz compilations, this one out of Hungary in the early 70s. I highly recommend it, the whole record is gorgeous, it's called "Modern Jazz Anthology X" and folks are sleeping on it! Staying in the same part of the world, I was introduced to Romanian jazz legend Johnny Cretu Raducanu after hearing a few Electrecord releases he had played on. The cover of this 10" and his own cover of Charles Mingus's "Haitian Fight Song" drove me to track down a copy online. The whole record is stunning. Speaking of stunning it is hard to find words to describe the beauty of this masterpiece by Winston Mankunku Ngozi, often referred to as South Africa's John Coltrane. It is a desert island record. The following tune, from the Roy Haynes Trio, is one I heard on Karriem Riggins masterful mix, "Music Kaleidoscope," and had to track down. I found it one weekend in a super random record store deep in Long Island. The Chucho Valdes represents my love of Cuban jazz; while I didn't find this record during my time in Havana, I did get hip to Mr. Valdes and months afterword dug this out of a crate on the floor under a table at the WMFU record fair. The Milton Banana cut I play here is from the first record of his I bought, I think at Human Head back in the day. He's killing it on the drums!! I don't remember when I first heard this RF 45 - maybe Junior played it? - but it's a gem, had to track one down. And Green Caterpillar man...I first heard this when Rev Shines played it YEARS ago on KBOO during Jumbo's "Beat Jeopardy" show. I remember being like "wtf is this?!?!?" - took many years to find a copy. I bought this off a dude in Colorado on Amazon.com in like 2015 for about $80. Clean. No regrets on that. The Soul Surfers cut here is just crazy to me, I think someone posted it on IG and I took notice. And finally, this beautiful cover of Kendrick Lamar by my guy Sly 5th Ave released by my people DJ Center and Footlong Development is a stone cold classic. I can't count all the DJ gigs I end with this 45 or all the people coming up to the turntables to see what it is. This is not the end of the podcast. There will be more episodes, though probably less often, as has been the case for much of 2024. Hoping to get back on a schedule of 1-2 episodes a month, possibly with some special guests. Speaking of guests, I want to thank everyone who's contributed a guest set these past ten years! Alex Stange, DO77, Duiji Mshinda, John Morrison, DJ Center, J. Rawls, Bruce Phillips, Evolve-One, LateBloomer and dflush, Daniel Littlewood, the DadBodRapPod, and Waffles Hidalgo. Much respect! And the biggest thank you goes out to everyone who's tuned in once or a hundred times, downloaded, subscribed, told their friends, or talked shit. It's all appreciated.…
It's a heavy week - bombing and violence continues and expands in Palestine and Lebanon, funded by the United States and seemingly unstoppable as we all just watch in horror. Here's a set in remembrance of so many who have been murdered by bombs and other weapons in the name of white supremacy and power. Tracklist: Najah Salam, Mustafa al Kurd, La Troupe Palestinienne de Deir Yassin, Jazayer, Dia Prometido, Max Roach, Moses Yoofee Trio, Yusef Kamaal…
Omega and I go way, way back, co-hosting a college radio show in the late 90s, talking shit about wack emcees and going on wild digging missions in the 2000s when these tracks were recorded. He remains one of my best friends and partner in crime today. He also happens to be an incredible emcee, with a style that certain emcee(s) making a name for themselves in 2024 took a big bite from (including one who literally was in rooms in 1999 where Omega spitting...go figure). So here's some tracks - some previously released, several unreleased - that we did in the 2000s, starting with "Eye Problems" which we recorded in Philadelphia back in 2001. These are "basement classics" since most were recorded in my Brooklyn basement apartment on Cool Edit. Everything except for one produced by me. Make sure to check out Omega's amazing and prolific output as a producer and emcee at https://omegajackson.bandcamp.com/ and https://soundcloud.com/omegajackson and cop all his projects! Not to mention our recent Neosapien EP available here: https://everydaybeats.bandcamp.com/album/all-we-need-is-a-title…
Been a lot going on, but finally I've returned with some treats! The records have been stacking up and need to get filed - so let's get into it! RIP to the legend Sergio Mendes, I played a short set of a few of my favorites of his. (Also RIP to the legend Frankie Beverly, tribute on a forthcoming episode.) The rest of this episode is an adventure through other recent arrivals and digs. Enjoy! Hope everyone is holding up ok in this awful world. Tracklist: Sergio Mendes (4 songs), Bobby Guajardo and the Latin Breed, Howard University Jazz Ensemble, Milcho Leviev, Release Music Orchestra, Agora, University of Puerto Rico, Elis Regina, Johnny Costa Trio…
Following up on last summer's salsa mix, here's some more of my favorite selections and digs to play loud in your car, living room, porch, or wherever! Tracklist: Ricardo Marrero, Bobby Valentin, Brooklyn Sounds, Latin Tempo, Ray Barretto, Joe Torres, Tata Vasquez, Pucho and His Latin Soul Brothers
Sorry for my absence - but I'm back with some mellow sounds, starting and ending with two great versions of the classic "People Make the World Go Round." The first is by Monty Alexander, which I only recently found out about, and the last is a more well-known take by Johnny Lytle. In-between are a variety of mellow-ish tunes for coolin out in the August heat.…
I don't own much reggae or dub music, and am absolutely no expert in the music or culture. But I deeply respect the politics and music, which is absolutely incredible and creative. Especially dub music, with its intricate sounds and rhythms. So here's a few selections from my tiny collection. Enjoy! Tracklist: Ernest Ranglin, Al Brown, Heptones, Burning Spear, Rico, King Tubby, Love Joys, Inner Circle, Glen Brown, Mighty Diamonds, Burning Spear…

So I spent a few weeks trying to do something 'special' for episode 250 of Pullin from the Stacks, but all my attempts just didn't feel right. Which meant I just kept putting off uploading a new episode this past month. But this week it was time for the latest Walking in Space livestream (second Thursday every month on Twitch!) and I felt like it came together pretty well, a blend of everything from folky-jazz to house to live hip-hop to gospel. A couple slip-ups in-between but that's just how things go! Hope you enjoy. Thanks to all the longtime listeners for sticking around and all the new listeners for checking this out! No track list for this one, but the final track is from my dude Jumbo's excellent gospel compilation "Love Hides All Faults," which everyone should check for!…

Pullin from the Stacks

So I'm a big fan of Sean Kantrowitz's podcast, especially "Making Illmatic" which he hosts with Midaz the Beast. The latest episode had them - and guest Supastition - breaking down the best tracks on the JayLib album, and at some point there was mention of how great De La Soul would have sounded on these beats. So I decided to test some of that out, and since I only have a few De La accapellas, I mixed in several other artists as well over about 10 minutes of my favorite beats from the Jaylib album. All vinyl, put together super quick, so it's a little rough on the edges but hope you enjoy!…
Back this week with some digs from the private press crate, one of my favorite places to find unique sounds and creative flavors. Hope you dig! Tracklist: Morning Sky, Faces of Jazz, Dale Jacobs Group, Lamont Johnson, Guzzia Bros. Band, Danny Ward and Reality, Les James Trio
I've been starting to index my records on Discogs recently, and it's been a good exercise to go back through a lot of albums I haven't listened to in a minute and decide whether I still want to keep them. When I first started digging in the mid-90s, Jimmy Smith albums (except for the elusive Root Down) seemed to be in dollar bins everywhere. I eagerly scooped them up since it was still Blue Note (many first presses) and you never knew what cool sounds you'd find on there. But admittedly as the years have passed, I've realized I can only handle so much b3 organ playing, especially in the more straight-ahead style of many of Smith's albums. So it's not often I've gone back to these records. But this week as I categorized them all and put a few on, I figured it was a good time to do a short tribute to the legend, and play a few non-Beastie Boy-sampled cuts I enjoy. A little crunchy at times but still some funky stuff! Dig it.…

Back from a short Las Vegas trip where I grabbed a few private press jazz pieces I'd been after for a minute (Moondog Records is highly recommended!) and spent a lot of time in antique and thrift stores. Here's some of those finds plus some newer releases for a more spacey vibe. Tracklist: Faces of Jazz, Tommaso Cappellato, Full Circle, Frank Strazzeri, Kenneth Jenkins, Jazzbois…
Decided to go back to the Serato box (yes I still rock the original Serato 1 box and have yet to upgrade) and just "freestyle" a mix of all kinds of joints! Second in my Walking in Space live stream series. Monthly every Thursday live on Twitch at 7pm PST and 10pm EST - twitch.tv/djianhead - playing all types of things analog and digital.
I don't remember who hipped me to Frank Cunimondo - I think I saw one of his records in Rob and Damien's old shop Sideman Records and was intrigued but didn't buy it then. And then maybe someone posted on IG something off of 'Echoes' and it was right up my ally - beautiful piano trio jazz with some rhodes as well. Snagged a copy of that album at WMFU a year later and was hooked. I know Dilla sampled one of his albums early but it's actually the only album of his I don't own - I just can't really get into Lynn Marino's voice, so that one isn't for me. But his other stuff is beautiful, independently released Pittsburgh jazz. I tried to play something from all his various albums (minus the Marino one) on here plus a bonus non-vinyl track. Enjoy!…
Trying my best to get these episodes out when I can! To tell the truth, it's been getting more difficult for a number of reasons. There will always be new mixes, though later this year they might be less frequent and in a different form. Stay tuned! For now, peep the latest set, various obscure digs along with a few that landed in the mail box recently. Tracklist: BP Convention, Corona Senior High Jazz Ensemble, Dan Peterson, Lou Stein, Clark College Jazz Orchestra, Gianni Brezzo, Art Blakey…
It's been three months since I released the limited cassette version of this and so I wanted to share the full version now that the cassettes are mostly sold out (a few still remain - djianhead.bandcamp.com) - hope folks dig it. The full story is on the Bandcamp page but I made this breaks mix to submit to Wax Poetics, who rejected it so I figured I'd put it out myself as a fundraiser for Palestine and abolitionist organizations in the U.S. Over $500 was raised in support! Thanks to everyone who supported then and now. And thanks to the legends whose voices appear on this mix.…
More and more, I've been collecting solo piano records, I imagine partly because I grew up listening to my mom play piano and partly because my ears have slowed down a bit as I've gotten older. Here's a first short stack of some favorites, which won't be the last. I have continued to be working with just one needle for most of this month, and this "mix" was admittedly done on just one turntable. But I just got my replacement styluses yesterday and I will be getting back to the usual programming soon! Tracklist: Shock G, Herbie Hancock, Mal Waldron, Dollar Brand, McCoy Tyner, Joe Chambers, Stanley Cowell…
Been having some needle issues this week so apologies for the delayed episode. Also was in NYC last week and managed to grab a few things, plus acquired a few more from online dealers recently. So here's a cool mix of various styles, genres, flavors and whatever else! Dig in. Tracklist: Takumi Moriya, James Moody, Jacky and Company, Joe Bataan, Lenny Wilson Trio, Pop Workshop, Don Walker…
A set of cooled out selections from recent buys the past couple months. Been marinating on some new record and music-related ideas for the spring and summer as well. For now, hope you dig this! Free Palestine! Tracklist: Solar Plexus, Marcos Resende Index, John Neptune, Ian Carr and Nucleus, John Wood, Dark Horse Reunion…
Back with an episode for the new year - some mellow-ish selections to set a tone. Trying to get back on pace with some weekly episodes for you all but it remains a little tough with everything going on. Hope folks are healthy and safe out there. Just fifty favorite records of mine that I happen to own in vinyl in no particular order. Mostly 90s 'backpacker' type stuff - it's a reflection of when I was collecting at the time, and doesn't necessarily represent all my favorite artists or favorite songs, many of which never were released on vinyl. I've never made a mix this long, and admittedly I ended up doing it in three separate parts. There was no real planning besides making sure I played 50 different records. Hope you dig it!…
Back after being absent for too long. Too much going on in my life and the world to put one of these together, but am trying to get back on track. This is a sample of the various records I've been stacking up in the meantime - hope you dig it! Tracklist: Adam Makowicz Unit, Frankie Ortega, Frank Cunimondo Trio, Don Elliot, Johnny Lewis Quartet, Nancy Priddy, Roy Meriwether, Frank Emilio, Round House, Neil Ardley, Galapagos Duck…
Hard to put a mix together right now with what's happening in Palestine. Sending love to everyone fighting against apartheid and to FREE PALESTINE! Here's a few low key tunes for when you need a break from the madness, if you're able to take one.
Decided it was worth pulling from my small stack of 10-inch size jazz vinyl for a variety of jazz cuts and styles. Enjoy! Tracklist: Nicola Conte, Cal Tjader, Music De Wolfe, Amanda Whiting, Jancsi Korossy, Johnny-Cretu Raducanu, Langston Hughes, Carol Kaye, Greg Foat, Randy Weston Trio
Been a hectic past month, but in-between it all I've picked up a few things here and there. Lots of 7inch heat on this one! Enjoy. Tracklist: Armand Boatman Trio, The Kanpai Quartet, Frollen Music Library, Aesthetic, Nautilus, Timo Lassy, Release Music Orchestra
This dedication mix is long overdue. In 1996, my friend Dave played me Journey to Satchidanada and I was blown away. A year or two later, I recovered a weathered copy of the record from a book and record store on East 7th Street in Manhattan while digging around with the same friend and it became a prized possession. Over the coming years I educated myself on more of her music, digging up copies here and there, and feel a bit lucky to have grabbed most of her records before the "craze" hit sometime in the late 2000s. It's truly unique and beautiful music - I admit that I can't totally stomach some of the more free-leaning cuts she recorded, in the same way I can't get into the late work of her also-legendary husband, but when I put these albums on the turntable it truly is a bit of an "inter-dimensional" experience, like the cover art of her World Galaxy album. Belated happy birthday to Alice Coltrane! Besides the first track, which is a clip from a seminal session she did with Marian McPartland for NPR's "Piano Jazz" series, these are all from my personal copies of her albums.…
This week I threw together one more summer mix of just a few records I don't play often enough. Big Nicola Conte vibes on this one, which some great, upbeat jazz-house-ish flavors! Enjoy.
Was traveling last week but came home with a stack of goodies. Here's a few new and old soulful cuts to play on a hot August day! Enjoy, and don't forget to subscribe on Apple or elsewhere if you can! Tracklist: Soul Surfers, Loving Cup, Tamba Trio, Maria Bethania Viana, Henry Mancini, Upp, De Vonne Armstrong, Patterns in Sound…
I'm by no means super deep on Brazilian jazz, but figured it was a good time to play a few favorites! This is a mix of mostly Brazilian legends with one or two covers of Brazilian classics played by U.S. artists sprinkled in. Enjoy! Tracklist: Baden Powell, Dom Salvator, Tania Maria, Dom Um Romao, Joao Donato, Tamba Trio, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Manfredo Fest, Azymuth, Moacir Santos, Deodato, Sergio Mendes, Freddie Roach…
It's hot out here! Hope everyone is staying cool in this climate change madness. Here's some salsa-related tunes to rock with the windows down or the AC blowing. Featuring (not necessarily in order): Bobby Matos, Fania All Stars, Latin Tempo, Ray Barretto, La Monumental, Joe Cuba Sextet, Orquestra La Corporation Latina, Eddie Palmieri, Rafael Solano, Mongo Santamaria…
Been a very busy and pretty rough last few weeks. Finally had a moment to catch my breath and put together a short mix. Big shout out to my man James Park in Brooklyn for the invite to spin at Bierwax - couldn't make it happen because of recent circumstances but the records on this mix are from the bag I brought to NYC before plans went sideways. Some favorites and some new stuff, breaks and soul and other flavors. Hope everyone is healthy and safe, and a huge thank you for tuning in to this and any other mix you might stumble upon! Please know that every play and listen is deeply appreciated.…
Sorry to be a bit off-schedule these days - a lot of travel and work making it harder to record mixes! But here's a few things that have made their way into the crates recently. Dig in! Tracklist: Cal State Long Beach Jazz Ensemble, Don Burrows, Astrud Gilberto, Sod, Johnny Walker, Ryo Kawasaki, Flying Island, Lee Brumley Trio…
Back with a little tribute to the LEGEND Tina Turner as well as some other funk cuts - switching things up from the usual jazz-centricity this week! Hope you dig. Tracklist: Tina Turner, Tina Turner, Bobby Caldwell, Jose Feliciano, Stephanie Mills, The Rock Flowers, Linda Clifford, Marvin Gaye
Thought it was a good time to do a tribute to one of my favorite indie labels, PM Records. Listening to their music is kind of like a sci-fi-jazz-adventure, where the sound isn't easily labeled but the music is taking the listener in all kinds of directions while keeping a solid groove. Hope you dig it! Tracklist: Steve Grossman, Doug Riley, Stone Alliance, Elvin Jones, Stone Alliance, Steve Grossman, Pat Labarbera, Don Thompson…
Back a little late this time, but with some serious heat! RIP to the great Linda Lewis, Jack Wilkins and Don Sebesky. Tracklist: Linda Lewis, Jack Wilkins, Don Sebesky, Weldon Irvine, The Gulizia Brothers Band, Don Thompson
Returning this week with a big stack of jazz and more I picked up last month in NYC, and also a couple selections in tribute to Harry Belafonte, probably one of the most incredible people to ever walk the earth. I recommend everyone go and pick up his autobiography just to see all the things he was involved in and accomplished. He lived an amazing life, and I start and finish this set with two tunes of his I love. Tracklist: Harry Belafonte, Rick Laird, Charlie Antolini, Masaru Imada, Walter Bishop Jr., Ted Vining Trio, Eric Kloss, Roy Ayers, Sunburst, Gil Scott Heron, Don Pullen, Harry Belafonte…

I came back the other week with a bag full of records I grabbed while in NYC to play for you all, but that will have to wait. In the past few days, two of the best to ever do it have transitioned after living incredible lives and giving all of us so much music and inspiration - Ahmad Jamal and Ivan "Mamao" Conti. It only felt right to pay tribute to them both on this episode. I tried to play some tunes, especially from Jamal's catalogue, that aren't the big sample-famous ones, but are favorites none the same. I've done two other mixes dedicated to Jamal in the past, who is my favorite pianist ever, whose music has been so important to me, whose records my dad passed down to me. Admittedly only in more recent years have I become more familiar with Conti's work, and have completely fallen in love with it. Salute to these giants!…

For my 45th birthday, I grabbed forty-five 45s and threw together this mix! Ran through most of them pretty quick so it's a little rough but hopefully a fun listen!
Back to the regular programming after a few weeks away! I have a LOT of new digs and purchases to play - here's just a short selection of some of the great music I've grabbed over the past month. RIP to the legends Wayne Shorter and Trugoy the Dove. Big shout out to everyone who streamed my De La Soul mix - make sure to support their re-releases! Tracklist: Pekka Pohoja, Wayne Shorter and Milton Nascimento, Yussef Dayes Experience, Juan Pablo Torres, Okonski, Joe Bonner, Don Burrows Quartet, Milt Jackson and Ray Brown…

Rest in Peace and Power Dave Trugoy the Dove Plug 2. An absolute tragic loss that I'm still in shock over. Sending love and support to his family and friends, and of course all the other fans like myself who literally grew up on De La Soul and Dave's voice and artistry. De La Soul is not dead however. Everyone should go out and buy and support their music when it starts streaming and becoming available for purchase in early March! This is a mix I made last Friday evening of some of my favorite De La records and samples, with a focus on Plug 2's mastery of the written and spoken word. All vinyl except for one obscure guest spot that I love which he did with Moka Only awhile back. Salute to one of the absolute best groups and emcees EVER.…
Since I've been playing a lot of mellow stuff recently, decided to turn things up a bit on this one! Pulling from old and new. Reminder to subscribe via your favorite podcast app if you haven't already! Tracklist: Leonhart Brass Band, Tata Vasquez, Johny Frigo, The Police, Deodato, Ivan Conti, The Roots…
Extra mellow flavor for starting off February. Snuck in a few digital treats between the analog on this one. Enjoy! Tracklist: Mary Lou Williams, H. Ray Crawford, Chino Corvalan, Moacir Santos, Jazzbois, Jazzbois, Lonnie Liston Smith
New episode featuring some laid-back sounds of recent aquisitions as well as favorites. Enjoy! Tracklist: Starship, Cal Tjader, Woody Shaw, Hermann Gehlen Big Band, Gabor Szabo, Greg Foat
Legendary drummer Max Roach's birthday was January 10th, and he would have been 99 yesterday. I decided to pull my small stack of Roach-led records and play a few selections in tribute to one of the greatest to do it. When I took a look on Discogs to see how many records he played on over the decades, it's almost endless - somewhere between 1500 and 2000, starting in the 1940s with Charlie Parker. Salute!…
New year, more records! Another eclectic set to start off 2023. Thanks everyone for tuning in! Tracklist: Outlaw Blues Band, Assemblage, Sonny Greenwich, Claus Ogerman Orchestra, Lamont Johnson
Last PFTS for the year! A mix of some of my favorite purchases this past year, especially in regards to older music. Recorded live last night on Twitch. Thanks so much to everyone who tuned in, downloaded, re-posted and listened to even part of an episode this past year - you are much appreciated! Tracklist: Terumasa Hino, Ken Rhodes, Tania Maria, King James Version, Collage, Brian Bennett, Greg Foat, Gianni Brezzo, Johnny Cretu Raducanu…

Salute to the legend Donald Byrd, who was born December 9, 1932 and would have been 90 this year. I'm a long way from having or hearing everything in his catalogue, but his records are pretty much all guaranteed brilliance and highly recommended. I do think his work gets slightly melded with and possibly overshadowed by the Mizell brothers later in his career, but Byrd was an amazing orchestrator, producer, song writer and of course musician in his own right. So I tried to keep the Mizell-related tracks to a minimum here and play a selection from throughout his catalogue. Enjoy!…

Decided to do a more thematic set this week, dedicated to the incredible Japanese jazz label Three Blind Mice. I don't have a ton of their records but wanted to highlight several I do have, and that might not be as "famous" as some of the other TBM records that have been repressed recently. Hope you dig it! Please subscribe on Apple Pods and leave a rating if you have a moment! Tracklist: Masaru Imada, T. Takahashi and Tokyo Union, Hideo Ichikawa Trio, Bingo Miki, Isao Suzuki Trio, Isoo Fukui Quartet, Sleepy Matsumoto Quartet, Shoji Yokouchi Quartet…
The warmth of a few classics along with more obscure titles this time around. Enjoy! Tracklist: Jazz Trio, Clear Path Ensemble, Joe Pass, Quiver, Catalyst, Ayers Rock, Brian Auger Trinity, Roy Ayers
Another eclectic collage of flavors and treats! Few records from my recent trip to Phoenix along with a couple of LA digs. Enjoy! Tracklist: Benoit, Bill Watrous Quartet, Young Artists Jazz Ensemble, Miami University Jazz Band, The Muffins
Got the jazz-rock-fusion flavors this time around, plus some trio jazz as well. Enjoy! Don't forget to subscribe. Tracklist: Trifle, Peter Herbolzheimer, David Axelrod, Michael Boothman, George Shearing, Lou Levy
Strictly jazz stacks on this one. Recent pulls and a few from the archives. Enjoy! Tracklist: Norman Simmons Quartet, Jukka Eskola Trio, Hampton Hawes Trio, Timo Lassy, Steve Goodman, Don Thompson Quartet
Very mellow episode this week, starting with a great cover of Charles Mingus's classic "Haitian Fight Song." Continuing to dig deep on the old and the new. Thanks so much for tuning in as always. Tracklist: Johnny Cretu-Raducanu, Surprise Chef, Misha Panfilov, Nala Sinephro, Phi-Psonics, Walter Wanderley…
More fusion sounds this week, with some brand new joints and some beat digging favorites. Plus a funky cover of a Marcus Miller / David Sanborn 80s cut! Tracklist: John Dankworth, Lalo Schifrin, University of Puerto Rico Jazz Ensemble, Greg Foat, Clear Path Ensemble, Azymuth
Things are slowly coming back into place as we enter the fall season - here's a new selection of tunes, some brand new, some decades old. Much appreciation to all the listeners, hope to have some new surprises for you all soon. Finally back after a several-week hiatus due to my move. Definitely some hard losses these past weeks, with absolute legends Pharoah Sanders and Ramsey Lewis passing away. Ramsey Lewis's records were some of the first jazz and funk records I purchased, and I highly recommend his catalog - it's still pretty affordable, and just as beautiful and funky as many of the "rare" and pricey records from other artists. Pharoah Sanders' records are getting a bit more pricey these days, but most are still attainable - and there are some good represses out there. Absolutely beautiful music. Rest in Power to both these legends, I'm eternally grateful for what they brought to all of us. I tried to intersperse some interview clips of each of them within this mix, which I did live on Twitch a few days ago.…
Sorry for the long delay, been a busy month. Starting to pack the records up now, so this will be my last mix at my current residence, and probably for another few weeks until I get things unpacked on the other side of LA. Kept things thematic for this one though - all jazz-related releases on the Melodiya label, which was the Soviet-era label that released records from not only Russia but other countries in region. Been slowly building a small stack of vinyl from this label and figured I'd play a few here. Enjoy!…
Some lazy summer jazz tunes for the hot, climate-change weather right now. Hope everyone is safe and staying as cool as possible! Appreciate all the listeners. More Knowledge Breaks mixes coming sometime soon, they just take a lot longer to put together but are on the way! Tracklist: Joe Pass, Don Randi, Joe Torres, Zimbo Trio, Kenny Dorham, Joe Bonner…
Several new-ish arrivals to the stacks featured this week! Many thanks for tuning in - if you can subscribe through whatever your favorite podcast app is, please do! Tracklist: Rupert Cobbett, Bobby Hamilton Quintet, Terumasa Hino Quintet, Tamba Trio, Green Sounds
Some recent digs, purchases and crate selections. Beautiful flavors. Hope you enjoy. Tracklist: Soul Surfers, Jun O'eil, Steve Davis, Oliver Sain, Tim Eyermann, Latarnik
A few beautiful jazz pieces this week, including some great covers of classics. Hope you all enjoy. Tracklist: Clifford Jordan, Dom Um Romao, Woody Shaw, Eldee Young, John Young Trio, Wynton Kelly Trio
Back with a new episode - and new intro! - this week. Only played four records but they're four beautiful ones, two older and two brand new releases. Tune in! Tracklist: Marc di Marcos, Gianni Brezzo, David Axelrod, Chip Wickham
As the podcast reaches 200 episodes, I want to again extend my deep appreciation to everyone who's tuned in since 2014! Wouldn't be doing this without all the amazing listeners. Also want to give a huge shout-out to Pipomixes and everyone else who has posted, tweeted, and said nice things about this podcast/mix-series/however you want to define it. Looking forward to the next 100 episodes! Recorded this one live on Twitch (twitch.tv/djianhead) and shout out to the folks who tuned in! As usual, every 50 episodes I dig into the hip-hop crates and play some independent releases, favorite b-sides and album cuts. Hope you dig it. Tracklist: Funkdoobiest, Nat Lover, Saafir, Kutfather, Shortie No Mass, Camp Lo, Natural Elements, Rhymefest ft Juice, Eardrumz ft Dr. Oop, Libertto ft Jumbo, Abyssinian Creole, Blackalicious ft Vursatyl, Powerrule, Lewis Parker, Grand Puba ft Sadat X, Raekwon, Latebloomer and Moemaw Naedon, Digable Planets…
I decided to feature legendary NBA coach Gregg Popovich on this Knowledge Breaks mix because, especially for a "rich white guy," as he refers to himself, he is incredibly outspoken on issues of white privilege, police brutality and anti-Black violence. I really appreciate that he pulls few punches and that he talks directly to other white people about confronting our privileges. This tape is a short compilation of some of his statements on things other than basketball - from George Floyd to Trump to Columbus Day. I wasn't able to find time to go back and forth on the breaks this month - so I blended together a few instrumentals off the vinyl platters for this one. Nor was I able to finish two tapes in one month, so I'm still a little behind schedule. But rest assured there's a lot more to come!…
More chill jazz selections this week. Enjoy - and subscribe on Apple if you can! Thanks for tuning in. Tracklist: Mal Waldron, Harold Danko Quartet, Tamba Trio, Stan Getz, Joe Bonner, Sly5thAve and Roberto Verastegui
Another set of new and old, fuzzy fusion pieces for your ears! Enjoy. Tracklist: Soul Surfers, Grupo Fa 5, Cesar Mariano, Sly5thAve and Roberto Verastegui, George Duke, Brian Jackson
Recorded this episode right after the Supreme Court leak of the opinion turning back Roe v. Wade, so I had to start it off with an old spoken-word piece from Digable Planets. "The facists are some heavy dudes / they don't really give a damn about life." Words that continue to ring true. If you're able please donate to these abortion funds listed on my Soundcloud and Twitter. Tracklist: Digable Planets, Azimuth, T. Takahashi, Gojkovic-Kovacev, Skymark, Raffy Bushman, New Haven Women's Liberation Rock Band…
Back from a week in my favorite city, New York! Got some serious digging in while there, and copped a few things that I figured I wouldn't see again anytime soon. Back in LA now to play a few of these things for you all. Recorded this episode live on Twitch again, which might become more of a routine in the future. We'll see. For now, enjoy. Gonna try and squeeze in a new Knowledge Breaks mix later this week as well, if possible. Tracklist: Kenny Dorham, Hideo Ichikawa Trio, Oleg Kutsekno, Bucknell Jazz and Rock Ensemble, Cesar Mariano, Roy Ayers, Tania Maria, Willis Jackson, Round Robin Monopoly…

Recorded live on a Sunday evening in front of a small Twitch audience, an hour of jazz joints make up the latest episode of Pullin from the Stacks! Stay tuned for future episodes to be streamed live as well starting in May. No episode next week as I'll be traveling but a new Knowledge Breaks before the month is out...thanks for tuning in! Tracklist: Donald Byrd, Hampton Hawes, Jazz Traficantes, George Shearing, Frank Cunimondo, Steve Grossman, Stanley Turrentine, Michel Sardaby, Clare Fischer, Atlantis Jazz Ensemble, Mutual Attraction, Build An Ark…
Short episode of some recent acquisitions and classics. Note to listeners: I'm going to start removing some past episodes of PFTS in the coming weeks on Soundcloud and iTunes, so make sure to download anything you've missed before it's gone! Tracklist: Felipe Dulzaides, Lance Ferguson, Sapo, Stone Alliance, Blossom Dearie, Diasonics…
For the third edition of Knowledge Breaks, I attempt to honor the legendary scholar, teacher, historian, activist, organizer and former political prisoner Angela Davis. As it's Women's History Month, I used only breaks and samples from women artists. It is impossible to encapsulate anyone in a 17-minute mix, but especially someone like Prof. Davis, who has spoken and written on so many critical issues over the past 50+ years, from prison abolition to support for Palestine - and shown how these struggles are all linked to one another. I do want to highlight two books of the many she's written that were important to me: Are Prisons Obsolete? from 2003 and Blues Legacies and Black Feminism from 1998. But everything she's done is highly recommended. I used excerpts from a number of recorded conversations from Youtube for this mix, as well as excerpts from two records I own featuring her voice as well as others speaking in support of her while she was incarcerated. As usual, I encourage everyone to listen to these in full if you're able. Links in my Souncloud.…
Set of fusion-y, laid back flavors new and old. Expect a new "Knowledge Breaks" mix next week before the month is out! Subscribe on Apple Podcasts if you're inspired! Tracklist: Azar Lawrence, Allegro Jazz Band, Crusaders, Diasonics, Emma-Jean Thackray, Headhunters
Back at it with a bunch of new digs! Starting this set off with a few pieces that just dropped into the PO box from Cuba, then moving into some private press jazz that I just scooped up in Portland, ending with a classic from the master Herbie Hancock. Enjoy! Tracklist: Ricardo Eddy y Expreso Ritmico, Felipe Dulzaides, Hilton Ruiz Trio, King James Version, Jan Deneau Trio, Bob Szainer Triad, Herbie Hancock…
I'm about to head up the coast to see the family but wanted to make sure I got a new episode in before I left! A few from the stacks and a few from recent digs on this one. Tune in! Tracklist: Dick McGarvin, Ken Rhodes, Marcio Montarroyos, Paulo Alencar, Bobby Shew, Marius Popp, Joe Bonner, Salvator Dragatto…
The second monthly episode of the Knowledge Breaks series is dedicated to the great Eugene McDaniels aka the Left Rev McD. McDaniels took a turn in the late 1960s from singing more straight-ahead jazz and soul singing to much more politically-themed works, both song by himself as well as written for others, such as the song "Compared to What" made famous by Les McCann and Eddie Harris. I think many beat-heads and record fiends know about McDaniels' epic "Headless Heroes of the Apocalypse" album for the samples and its rarity, but the songs on the album scared the U.S. power structure so much that McDaniels was essentially blacklisted by his own record label. This didn't stop him however from setting up his own publishing company, which allowed him to survive on the royalties from his song writing, which includes the classic "Feel Like Making Love." There wasn't a tremendous amount of interview or vocal snippets available but I found a few great ones that I recommend listening to in full below. Since many of the breaks on "Headless Heroes" are well-known, I tried to mix in a few of his other works as well as covers and more obscure songs. His music and words are HIGHLY recommended and I hope everyone checks out his songs if you haven't before. Clips on this mix are from some great videos linked on my Soundcloud page. Please share!…
Back at it with something a little more mellow, new and old. Huge Rest in Power to the legend Syl Johnson. Thanks everyone for continuing to tune in. Tracklist: Syl Johnson, Elvin Jones, Ken Rhodes, Tamil Rogeon, Wildflower, Timo Lassy, Pharoah Sanders
A little something different this week! I bought a Giogio Moroder record the past weekend in San Diego (with a classic sample) and figured I'd switch things up from the more usual PFTS flavor. Dig in! Tracklist: Giorgio Moroder, Bobby Caldwell, Kraftwerk, Keni Burke, Mtume, Orange Lake Drive, Sade
A more spacey episode this week as January comes to a close. Don't forget to check out last week's first "Knowledge Breaks" mix if you haven't already! Many thanks as always for tuning in. Tracklist: Frank Cunimondo Trio, Hysear Don Walker, Surprise Chef, Vels Trio, Timo Lassy, the Seatbelts
This is the first in a new monthly series I'm hoping to do for 2022: "Knowledge Breaks." Each episode will be a short mix of breakbeats and samples from my collection, overlaid with excerpts from some of my favorite inspirational, radical people. When I was thinking of who to feature first, my partner Bina made the great suggestion of starting with the incredible bell hooks, who sadly passed last month. bell hooks wrote about love, Black liberation, feminism, and so much more. Her book "All About Love" was and is very important to me. I highly recommend everyone seek out her work, especially those involved in the educational or academic fields. Many of the interviews that I excerpted on this tape were from a series hosted by the New School, and I hope everyone checks out the full episodes (linked from my Soundcloud page). There is no way to do justice to legendary people like bell hooks in such a short little mix. These are just a few excerpts I found compelling. The goal of this mixtape series is after a year, have a nice little compilation of voices, beats, breaks and knowledge. I hope everyone digs it, and searches out more from all of those featured. Please share!…

Ending 2021 with a long set of some of my favorite purchases this past year! (I can't really call most of these "digs"). This episode is a combination of some long-time wants I knocked off the list with some of my favorite new records by both young, incredible artists as well as brilliant veterans like Brian Jackson. A huge, massive thank you to all the listeners who have tuned in this year, whether new or old. I greatly appreciate you. Special shout to Pipomixes for posting my mixes and for keeping DJ mixes alive for us all still doing this stuff! Tracklist: Michel Sardaby, Brian Jackson, Nucleus, JAB, Alex Santos Orchestra, Johnny Frigo Sextet, Garay Trio, Brandee Younger and Dezron Douglas, Jimmy Heath, Amanda Whiting, Mankunku Quartet…
Heavy on the keys this time around! Joints new and old to meditate with on a chilly December day. Hope everyone is staying warm. Tracklist: Kenny Barron, Billy Cobham, Joe Harnell, Steve Kuhn, Jeff Palmer, Ashley Henry, Nala Sinephro
I've said it before, there's just so much good music - especially that categorized as "jazz" - coming out that isn't necessarily on vinyl. Additionally, I can't necessarily afford every new vinyl release, and so will occasionally grab a song or two off an album on Bandcamp. This is a set of recent-ish releases that I've found over the past few months, some might be available on vinyl, others might not, but hopefully you enjoy them all. While Pullin from the Stacks remains primarily based off records, I think I will start mixing in a selection or two through Serato here and there going forward. Tracklist: The Hot at Nights, Qame Faraq, Dojo Cuts, Sam Fribush Trio, Chicago Jazz Collective, Farnell Newton, Ladybird Orchestra…
This past weekend I hit up Egon's store Rappcats where DJ Shadow was selling some of his vast collection. I missed the opening day but snuck in and out on Sunday with a random high school band record, featuring a nice cover of Freddie Hubbard's "Little Sunflower" as well as some original tunes. That record reminded me I'd been wanting to do a school band episode of Pullin for awhile now, so it was a good inspiration to dig through my crate of very random college and high school music for a couple of my favorites. You never know what you're getting with these records - so many are poor quality recordings or cheesy renditions, but among the many there are some real gems. Hope you dig.…
An amazing record recently landed in my post office box, an absolute classic of an album I honestly never thought I’d see in person let alone get a copy of: Winston Mankunku Ngozi’s quartet masterpiece “Yakhal Inkomo” - I insist everyone at least take a listen to this on Spotify or elsewhere. On this episode I've included the title track to start off the set. There is also an excellent interview with South African jazz scholars Percy Mabandu, Kevin Davidson, Nduduzo Makhathini and Salim Washington discussing the importance of this recording, link is on my Soundcloud. Anyway, I decided to partner it on this podcast with a few other horn-heavy selections. Hope you dig! Tracklist: Mankunku Quartet, Azar Lawrence, Lee Morgan, Sahib Shihab, John Coltrane…
RIP Dr. Lonnie Smith. We're back with just a few mostly longer selections for your ears. Digging adventures continue, and more in store in the coming weeks! Thanks again for tuning in. Tracklist: Dr. Lonnie Smith, Nucleus, Whole Darn Family, Three Pieces, Gerry Neiwood

Last month the latest edition of the Jailhouse Lawyer's Handbook was released by the Center for Constitutional Rights and the National Lawyer's Guild. Anyone in prison can write to either organization for a free copy, and family and friends can view and download copies at jailhouselaw.org. As part of the release, award-winning journalist and jailhouse lawyer Mumia Abu-Jamal recorded a segment on Prison Radio (prisonradio.org) regarding the critically important work of Jailhouse Lawyers. The Center for Constitutional Rights, where I work, also recorded a podcast featuring JLH co-editor and senior staff attorney Chinyere Ezie discussing the latest edition of the handbook. You can listen to that full podcast here: ccrjustice.org/activist-files Also in the past month, the legend Brian Jackson released his new album with Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Adrian Younge on their label Jazz is Dead. It's an incredible piece of music and I recommend everyone purchase it! You can grab a copy here: thebrianjackson.bandcamp.com/album/bria…son-jid008 I decided it might be fun to throw together a quick mix of parts of Brian Jackson's new album beneath the important words of Mumia and my colleague Chinyere. It's a short mix, just around 15 minutes long, but hope everyone takes a moment to listen. Jailhouse Lawyer's are doing unbelievable legal and advocacy work from inside prison walls that is often unheard and unappreciated on the outside. Many thanks to all who appear on this mix!…

As summer winds down, Pullin from the Stacks is back with a bunch of new arrivals in the lab! A few from recent digs and others that touched down in the post office box, new releases and old. Taking a brief break from the usual Pullin from the Stacks schedule to bring everyone a short series of "summer" mixes. Since I don't have enough time these days to plan out and put together something longer, I'm going to make this a series over the next month or so. Here's the first! A mix of favorites and the more obscure. Hope it can be played with the windows down on a cool evening - enjoy!…
Just pulled some mellow favorites from the jazz stacks this week, hope you enjoy! If you feel inspired, subscribe, rate and leave a comment on iTunes / Apple Podcasts for me! Gift of Gab was most definitely a big part of my life's soundtrack since high school. I might have seen Blackalicious in concert more often than any other group. He was one of the most brilliant emcees I've ever heard, and from all accounts was just a great human. Sending love out to his family and friends. This is just a short tribute mix with a few favorite tracks and a few samples that give me that feeling that became part of the legendary music he and Chief Xcel made together. RIP.…
Back with a new session after my first travels since before the pandemic started. The selections here represent a few themes from this past month, in no particular order. Starting this off is a new one from the Phi-Psonics out of LA, who dropped two 45s a couple weeks ago - I picked them up from my digging buddy Geoff during a listening session at his spot last Friday. Next is Groove Holmes doing a live version of "Song for my Father" in tribute to my dad and all the dads everywhere this past Sunday. Then there's something futuristic from Joe Armon-Jones LP from a couple years ago that I picked up while in Portland the other week. Speaking of Portland, the next cut is from Slickaphonic, one of the incredible releases from Albina Music Trust, an organization and label releasing and documenting amazing jazz and funk gems from my hometown. Then there's a fusion classic from Janne Schaffer that I'd slept on before but grabbed a copy of while digging around Portland. Finally, now that summer has officially started, I figured I'd break out my dad's 45 of Quincy Jones's version of 'Summer in the City.' Seemed appropriate. Enjoy.…
Special FreePalestine! episode dedicated to all the Palestinians under siege and fighting to hold onto their homes and their loved ones while the Israeli state continues to massacre people and steal Palestinian land, as they have for many decades. I urge everyone who isn't already supporting the Boycott Divest Sanctions movement to read up on it - you can do so here bdsmovement.net/ - and support the boycott of the apartheid Israeli state. I have also included two short interview excerpts on this mix from the 1970s record "Palestine Lives!" for some historical context. On my Soundcloud I have posted a number of places to donate and support. This episode is also dedicated to my partner and her family, as well as all my friends and colleagues breaking their fast over this next 24 hours. Eid Mubarak! These selections celebrate Muslim musicians, including Ahmadi Muslims. Tracklist: Interview, La Troupe Palestinienne de Deir Yassin, Jaubi, Yusef Lateef, Sulieman Saud (McCoy Tyner), La Troupe Palestinienne de Deir Yassin, Interview, Abdullah Ibrahim…
I noticed that the great Cal Tjader passed away around 40 years ago today (May 5th), and while I typically don't like doing death anniversaries, it did feel like a good time to revisit some of his records. The feeling of his music can't be understated - it just feels GOOD. Especially right now as spring moves toward summer, it seems perfect to break these albums out. This episode is also a bit of a sequel to an earlier Tjader mix on episode 24 of PFTS - I made sure to play a different selection of tracks, so go back and check that one too if you haven't already! Hope you enjoy.…
Since it's both International Jazz Day and 45Friday I figured I'd throw a mix of some jazz 45s together. This is completely rough and raw, I just grabbed a stack of 45s and did this in one take, just what felt good. Hope you enjoy!
After I finished recording this episode, I realized I'd played two records featuring Jorge Santana - one by his group Malo, and another with him as a guest with the Fania All-Stars. I looked him up and realized he had sadly passed away last spring. Rest in Power Jorge Santana! I hope everyone enjoys his guitar work on these tunes as well as the other tracks featured here. Tracklist: JAB, Malo, Reuben Wilson, Rimshots, Fania All-Stars…
I grew up listening to my mother play piano in the house every day, and it is my favorite instrument. I want to celebrate women like my mom this month - here's a selection of some well-known and lesser-known incredible women pianists/keyboardists/organists, doing mostly original compositions. Tracklist: Tania Maria, Rhoda Scott, Brenda Russell, Patrice Rushen, Mary Lou Williams, Patti Brown, Shirley Scott, Alice Coltrane…
A belated birthday dedication to the one and only Nina Simone. Admittedly it took me a little while to fully get into Nina's records, even the well-known ones, but these days I always find something new and beautiful I hadn't noticed before on each one. Her eclectic song selection and style is so unique, there is nothing like it. The selections here are just a few of my favorites. Hope you enjoy. Special thank-you to Alan Levine and Ruth and Judith, who generously donated their copies of Nina's records to me in recent years.…

Piano and keyboard heavy episode this week, including two selections from the legend Chick Corea who sadly passed a few days ago. One of those artists you think will always be around, who made so many incredible records that I've been listening to since I first started collecting. Rest in Power. I have a stack of things old and new that have been landing in my post office box the last month, playing a few here and hope to play more soon! Hope everyone digs it. Tracklist: Chick Corea, Allegro Jazz Ensemble, Marcos Resende and Index, Hampton Hawes, Vyacheslav Novikov, Michel Sardaby, Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock…

About a year since the last dusty-but-digi mix, here's a blend of instrumentals copped from Bandcamp and elsewhere. Hopefully a thing or two here that you might not have heard before. Dilla, Zeitgeist Freedom Energy Exchange, Kaidi Tatham, Marc Mac, DJ Ian Head, J. Rawls, Jaubi, Dougie Stu…
