Risk management should take human and cultural factors into account. There is little guidance beyond the few statements within that standard on how to apply culture, today Joey walks us through ways in which you and your entity will be able to further understand the importance of acknowledging culture within entity and what to do within your risk management department. How does it relate to risk management and how do you apply it? Joey breaks down the definition of organizational culture for better understanding and the ability to apply it to your workplace. Dr. Edgar Schein’s definition of organizational culture “A pattern of shared basic assumptions that was learned by a group as it solved its problems of external adaptation and internal integration that has worked well enough to be considered valid and therefore to be taught to new members as the correct way to perceive, think. and feel in relation to those problems.” This definition explains how culture is formed – a city is founded or a new startup begins. The leader wants things done a certain way in the beginning if it leads to success then overtime that becomes the way of doing things and an unconscious way of doing things. Culture becomes embedded below the surface for a long time.
