Episode 158 – Styx & Kansas Part 11, 2020 to 2021, The Absence of Presence and Crash of the Crown The Palaver goes into extra time! We found that we couldn’t close our Styx and Kansas discussions without talking about these two absolute gems from 2020 and 2021. In our explorations of the later catalogs, we all found ourselves enamored with these two records. They each display a vibrance and vitality that is both refreshing and reassuring. We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we do. Special Episode – Interview with Fenando Perdomo – January 2025 At long last we had the privilege of speaking with Fernando Perdomo! You can’t be in the prog world in the 21st century and not know of Fernando. We were thrilled that he was able to make time to discuss many topics including his massive, ambitious Waves project, influences, writing and recording style, and, of course, the devasatating LA fires. For a man who is going to release 12 albums in a year, Fernando still managed to find time to help his friend and neighbors. Check out Fernando’s Waves and MusicCares! Special Episode – Interview with Randy McStine – December 2024 We were very honored to welcome renowned musician Randy McStine to the Palaver in December 2024. Randy shared some of his unequalled experiences throughout his career. We were able to discuss his current solo release, Mutual Hallucinations, as well as his work with Porcupine Tree. Randy has released a wide variety of albums over the years and worked with artists from Sound of Contact to Steven Wilson. His insights from the progressive rock scene to his own process for making and performing music are illuminating to say the least. We hope you enjoy this delightful conversation. Episode 157 – Styx & Kansas Part 10, 1986 to 2000 Technical Note: apologies for the stalker breathing throughout this episode In this episode the group considers the decade plus where both Styx and Kansas search for who or what they are. Both bands see significant lineup changes resulting in albums that, while enjoyable, didn’t seem to capture the previous magic. This period ends for both bands by trying to recapture the intangible aspects of their heyday personnel. We loosely cover the four albums in this period, Edge of the Century, Brave New World, Power, and Somewhere to Elsewhere. Episode 156 – Styx & Kansas Part 9, 1983 – Kilroy Was Here Another palaver years in the making. Kilroy Was Here is a clear enigma. Some of us LOVE this record. Some of us do not love this record. Some of us are in the middle. There are certainly some very strong feelings on each side of this, but they ultimately lead to interesting discussions. The group certainly had a great time discussing this record. Styx have given us much to consider with this offering. Episode 151 – Styx & Kansas Part 4, 1977 – The Grand Illusion and Point of Know Return The year of 1977 is a huge one in the Styx / Kansas timeline. Point of Know Return is the album that sent Kansas into the stratosphere. With the title track and the timeless Dust In the Wind, Point of Know Return is truly a classic album that you should listen to before you die. The Grand Illusion shows Styx as a band finally showing some of the focus that will define them for the next several years. Another great title track opens the record. Come Sail Away showcases Dennis DeYoung while Fooling Yourself is a Tommy Shaw gem. Songs like Castle Walls have enough hobbit shit to establish Styx’s prog cred. This is a great year! Episode 150 – Styx & Kansas Part 3, 1976 – Crystal Ball and Leftoverture In this episode, the group covers 1976 in the combo Styx / Kansas timeline. Crystal Ball sees the introduction of Tommy Shaw to the Styx lineup. Some of the results are immediately remarkable and some of the results are as uneven as the rest of the catalog to this point. Crystal Ball shows a band that is still working to perfect their formula. Leftoverture, on the other hand, is an album for the ages. Kansas were able to craft a timeless classic from a potentially devastating set of circumstances. Leftoverture was the album that broke Kansas as stars and the songs hold up. Episode 149 – Styx & Kansas Part 2, 1975 – Song for America, Masque, and Equinox In this episode, the group covers 1975 in our combined Kansas and Styx timeline with three strong albums. Song for America, the sophomore effort from Kansas, shows a band that is racing ahead in their development behind the strength of the title track and Lamplight Symphony. Masque, Kansas’ third record later that year, is another step toward their breakthrough success in 1976. Masque has some of the flaws you would expect from an album produced so quickly after its predecessor, but is a great listen nonetheless. Styx’s Equinox is the last album Styx will make before the addition of Tommy Shaw and shows a band still searching for their true identity. The Styx sound is here, but there is still something missing. 1975 was an important year for both of these bands, setting them up for their huge successes. Bonus Episode – Ranking the Albums from Episode 139 Through 146 Everyone knows that we here at the Palaver love to rank things. It seemed obvious then to rank the albums in our most recent “Less Old” segment. How does one compare recent releases from the likes of Yes and Marillion to those from Tears For Fears and Porcupine Tree? Where does King’s X fit into the conversation? We think this ranking episode is surprising in several ways with some pretty different opinions about records in some areas and almost unanimity on others. We hope you enjoy this lighthearted walk through this collection of releases. SCS30 – Seal and The Buggles in Houston, April 2023 On a trip to Texas, Paul and Ken had to opportunity to catch a concert of Seal with The Buggles opening. Falling squarely in the prog-not-prog category, this show provided ample opportunity to the group to appreciate top-tier songs and musicianship. From the dual role of the Buggles band through the staying power of Seal’s voice, this concert was definitely one to experience. Paul and Ken even had time to check out the Rothko chapel (famous for inspiring the song Fourteen Black Paintings) and compare notes with Joe on his previous visit. Episode 146 – Sound of Contact Part 1, Dimensionaut The Palaver finally gets to discuss an album that has changed our views of the world. Sound of Contact are deep in Palaver lore even if we didn’t know it at the time. We “discovered” this album long after SoC had gone their separate ways, but the impact is not in the least diminished. The quartet of Simon Collins, Dave Kerzner, Matt Dorsey, and Kelly Nordstrom were able to construct one of the all-time strongest prog albums. With deep songwriting, stellar performances, and sublime production, Dimensionaut is an album that continues to reward the listener with new perspectives and ideas even as the music continues to age perfectly. We found out after this episode about some of the trials the band went through while recording this, but the end product remains completely unmarred by any internal strife. Episode 145 – Tears For Fears Part 1, The Tipping Point The group goes to the edge of prog-not prog for their first episode on Tears for Fears. A sublime album that was 18 years in the making. The group marvels in all aspects of this recording, amazed that such a gem exists. The Tipping Point find Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith in a fertile collaborative zone creating meaningful and catchy songs while wrapping them in almost perfect production. The Palaver finds so many things to gush about in this episode. We hope you enjoy it as well. SCS29 – Porcupine Tree, Philadelphia & Dallas, September 2022 The group relives some of the highlights of seeing Porcupine Tree on the Closure/Continuation tour in the fall of 2022. Ken saw the show in Philly and Joe saw it in Dallas. The C/C tour was a sheer powerhouse of sound and sight. Excellent stage production and the addition of Randy McStine really pushed these shows over the top. The Palaver stands in awe of Porcupine Tree and this tour. Episode 144 – Porcupine Tree Part 1, Closure/Continuation Despite the Palaver’s general love affair with Steven Wilson, we have never officially covered a Porcupine Tree album. This segment on (relatively) newer records opens the door for us to correct that. Closure/Continuation is a monumental album from a talented group of musicians that manifest music that is greater than the sum of their parts. To cut to the chase, we find C/C to be a great album. This episode is related (in a way) to SCS29, which occurred when we saw Porcupine Tree live before we recorded this. SCS28 – Yes in Lititz PA, 2023 In this Special Concert Series episode of Progressive Palaver Paul and Ken share their experiences seeing Yes in the dress rehearsal for their The Classic Tales of Yes Tour. The show was, as usual, performed at Mickey’s Black Box in Lititz, PA. Friend of the Palaver Ken Fuller has previously described the experience at MBB and Paul and Ken’s descriptions match perfectly. This show seems to find Yes in a more comfortable, dare I say stable, place as the settle into a traditional five-piece with new music under their belt. The highlight of this episode, however, has to be ken’s description of his coming-in-hot arrival at the show. It’s a classic Palaver moment! Episode 143 – King’s X, Three Sides of One It was 14 long years between King’s X albums. That amount of time can create several different outcomes. We here at the Palaver were eagerly awaiting 2022’s Three Sides of One. We were not disappointed. Three Sides finds King’s X in an excellent creative and expressive place resulting in a truly delightful album. Songwriting, tone, and delivery are all on this excellent outing from one of our favorite bands. Having seen the band several times in support of this record, we find King’s X to be a band with a new sense of life and benefit of a strong fan base. SCS27 – Kansas, Nashville TN with Len and Dave Boclair Joe’s brothers Len and Dave join the show for an all-Boclair palaver! A rare face-to-face discussion in Nashville a day after Len and Dave saw Kansas at the Ryman Auditorium on their 50th Anniversary tour. Kansas has been a shared understanding amongst these brothers for nearly 35 years and it was nice to share the experience with our audience. We cover the usual special concert series topics including the venue, the band members, and the set list. Len and Dave share their insights on all these and more. This preamble to our upcoming segment on Kansas (and Styx) is a fun flavor palaver we hope you all enjoy. Special Episode – ProgStock 2023 Part 4, Matt Dorsey In our final installment of pre-ProgStock 2023 episodes, we have the chance to catch up with friend of the Palaver Matt Dorsey. We have a great conversation with Matt about the upcoming ProgStock including his own set and working with Dave Kerzner including the Sound of Contact special. Matt is, as always, very gracious and informative about his upcoming plans (new music soon?), some historical perspective on Sound of Contact, and how his ProgStock set came to be. We hope you enjoy this palaver with a truly class act. Special Episode – ProgStock 2023 Part 3, Tom Palmieri and Ann Rinaldi In part 3 of our special ProgStock 2023 series, we manage to score some time with the duo responsible for all the wonderfulness that is ProgStock - Tom and Ann! They are able to provide their usual delightful level of insight into what it takes to make a prog rock festival happen. How they are able to maintain such pleasant demeanors while doing what they do is a mystery, but they manage admirably. Tom and Ann let us in on how ProgStock 2023 came to be. They cover the venue change and the lineups. They provide a delectable preview of what we can all expect at this year’s festival. It’s ALWAYS a pleasure to catch up to these two giants of the genre. Episode 142 – Marillion Part 15, An Hour Before It’s Dark Regardless of what season it is, Marillion’s An Hour Before It’s Dark is a powerful experience. As the Palaver considers this collection of songs born of the pandemic, we struggle with where to put the meaning. Hogarth and company provide us a rich tapestry to consider. From the power of the opening of the album to the sometimes-confounding Sierra Leone, AHBID offers us much to enjoy and contemplate. While the Palaver’s opinions of this record were still evolving at the time of this recording, we hope you enjoy where we were at the time.
