   New Music For The 6 String Guitar

   To Look A Whale In The Eye

   Masterful Welsh guitarist Toby Hay brings mostly original and one traditional piece to showcase his custom guitar, the Fylde Curlew. The original music is inspired by nature, in the form of the landscape of the Cambrian Mountains, where he lives with his sheep dog Bear, who is also an inspiration. All tracks were recorded live in studio.

      ARRIVAL

      Milanese operatic/neofolk artist, Ekaterina Sherehova, seems to only release singles, so I keep getting them, one at a time. They are brilliantly produced, with her stunning voice unerringly crystal clear. She has great range, and here she goes into her higher register with a Nordic, Celtic-tinged piece, which is forceful and energetic. The song delves into pagan territory, referencing nature-borne power and reincarnation.

         Mirrors

         Every once in a while something so incredibly nostalgic and beautiful finds it’s way through all of the noise. This is psych folk at it’s finest. I am afraid it may be all we will ever hear of this extraordinary Australian singer/songwriter, he has apparently diminished into the West. We’re listening, Fallow Brook. I hope you know.

            I told you I will

            The Wood Demons return with their own spin on psych/prog/folk/post rock, this time with 5 extended tracks. There are times when it is a true throwback to the golden era of progressive music, but also blends in plenty of psych folk elements to keep it up in the exosphere. This band really glistens when it stretches out, as in the final 17-minute tour de force, but to give you a taste, I am choosing the eerie opener, I Told You I Will, to represent them.

               Ether Yonder: Third Eye Temple B-Sides

               Tyler Kamen returns to share unfinished tracks from his previous release, calling them “B-Sides.” All of these would have certainly been apt on that release, however, there is an softer feel overall to these tunes, less LSD, more psilocybin or mescaline.

                  The Night is Old

                  On this latest release, Avi C. Engle continues in their melancholic meanderings, with hypnotic swirls and mist-shrouded glimpses into dark and fabled corners. They bring their usual accompaniment of acoustic guitar and bass, gudok, and percussion and are joined by Tsinder Ash on clarinet and backing vocals, as well as Brad Deschamps on melodica and guitar pedals, and Liz Dimo on acoustic guitar, each on a different track.

                     From the title, and as you look at the cover, then hear the delicacy of the music and dulcet tones of the female singer, you might think these are all going to be songs of a more ancient nature, but there are some surprisingly modern inspirations here. From ancient ship exploration, seashore shenanigans of young broken hearts, to sirens calling, each song is a complete tale, as folk songs of any time should be

                        Already Home

                        Psychtronica emanating from Reading, Hoopy Frood brings a heady mix of psych, electronica, trance, and toss in some reggae to spice things up. Myshell Higgins brings dreamy vocals to guide you into their exoplanetary Terpsichorean world. Most of the tracks include lyrics, but my favourite is the slightly atypical opening track.

                           Ascending: Exclusive pre album release track

                           The Prophets of Zarquon have released 2 singles ahead of their upcoming full-length release, which I am very much looking forward to. They continue in their mythical/mystical vein, here, invoking autumnal spirits to raise them from the mundane up to the heavens via a folly with a seemingly unending staircase on a hill. Ascendant, indeed.
