On the Season 2 debut of Lost Cultures: Living Legacies , we travel to Bermuda, an Atlantic island whose history spans centuries and continents. Once uninhabited, Bermuda became a vital stop in transatlantic trade, a maritime stronghold, and a cultural crossroads shaped by African, European, Caribbean, and Native American influences. Guests Dr. Kristy Warren and Dr. Edward Harris trace its transformation from an uninhabited island to a strategic outpost shaped by shipwrecks, colonization, the transatlantic slave trade, and the rise and fall of empires. Plus, former Director of Tourism Gary Phillips shares the story of the Gombey tradition, a vibrant performance art rooted in resistance, migration, and cultural fusion. Together, they reveal how Bermuda’s layered past continues to shape its people, culture, and identity today. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices…

Every tool is extensible, from commercial closed source to freeware to open source. It simply becomes a question of how and where you hook into the system. This is why performance testing tools are built around general purpose computer languages. At the time a tool is designed and constructed it’s impossible to foresee all of the possible interfaces and applications it will be used to test. As a result, the ability to extend is critical capability of performance testing tools. In the eventual career of a performance tester there will come a day when your current tool just can’t cut it, or your boss wants you to switch, or the R&D department for your favorite tool all give up and just quit. For whatever reason, it’s good to know the ins and outs of switching tools and converting your work into a new tool. Have you seen me? I'm a tool feature that's been missing for many months or even years. In this next episode of PerfBytes we'll investigate exactly what kinds of features and capabilities we'd love to see make their way into every performance tool on the market! So many times these great ideas are left aside due to complexity, cost or lack of popularity. But still - wouldn't it be nice!?! PerfBytes Season 5 is formally sponsored by: - Hewlett-Packard Enterprise ( http://www.hpe.com ) - Flood.io ( http://www.flood.io )…
According to Howard techniques are "sorta the methods that we do things in" and ya know, we didn't really argue with that. In this second half of the recording session we'll talk about taking your new or old tooling and doing some new and cool things with 'em.

You journey through a land of both shadow and substance and you can see the curve on the CPU graph is totally going in the wrong direction - a little worse every minute, every user and soon enough the system will just tip completely over. Needle. Haystack. Go! Sometimes all we get from our load testing tools is a capture of the response times and throughput, and maybe some minimal resource monitoring if you're lucky. ”Don’t look at me, boss - it’s a problem with the tool.” In particular it’s probably an incompatibility or extreme complexity with a sophisticated performance testing tool that leads you to just throw our hands in the air and point the finger at the vendor or the technology. In this episode we’ll talk about the pitfalls of such behavior, the legitimate and not-so-legitimate arguments of tool blasphemers and also what you can do as a test manager to resolve such situations. Back when I grew up in Minnesota we played a game called "Duck, Duck, Gray Duck where one my friends would run around the circle of all us kids and tap us on the head - around and around. It's basically the same way a load balancing algorithm works to enable horizontal scalability of large systems. Except that the load balancer would not randomly tap one of us and say Gray Duck and then go sprinting around to take our spot. That's not actually how node eviction works in clustering. In this episode of PerfBytes we are joined by our old friend Alon Girmonsky from Blazemeter to discuss the common challenges with modern load balancers; both software and hardware types. It's a lonely life, as a performance tester in an agile shop. Your work is pushed to the end of the iteration and then they shut you in the lab for four days right before the release. Well, it's time to get performance up-and-out of the lab and build it into the sprint. That's right - you can become a fully-integrated part of the SCRUM as a performance engineer, enhancing each user story with your brilliance about performance. This epsiode of PerfBytes will help you to transcend the lowly life in the lab and engage up-front with developers, product owners and stakeholders to raise their attention to the ever-increasing importance of performance. Where a user story fails to include performance criteria, you'll be there. When a developer fails to run multiple threads of a unit test, you'll be there. Able to construct an integrated performance test into a single nightly test run, it's you to the rescue! It is not safe to drive a car with your eyes closed. It is also not safe to operate expensive, mission-critical computing systems without monitoring the performance. How much CPU did that query use? How much memory is being allocated/de-allocated? How many bytes per second are being sent and received from the browser? Monitoring the resource utilization of your application is an absolutely essential part of making the necessary calculations to properly test performance. Without those measurements, all you can do is take a guess? Client response time is only one part of the puzzle. We tuned the databases - for scaling up and scaling out - grids and clouds and no-sql. We tuned the servers - for scaling up and scaling out - farms and clusters and automated deployment. We tuned the network - accelerations and caching and CDNs. What's next? Web Performance Optimization - appealing to developers and designers alike, we are focusing on that last (or maybe first) piece of the puzzle: the client-side. There's been an explosion of tools and techniques around browser optimization and performance analysis, since the first time Steve Souders released the first version of YSlow! Now we have a twitter hash tage #WPO, meetup groups from New York to Seattle, to Frankfurt and Beijing.
