Hurricane Beryl brought torrential rain and tropical storm-force winds to Jamaica Wednesday without making landfall. Texas Gov. Gregg Abbott directed state agencies to prepare for potential impacts in case the storm hits southern Texas over the weekend.

The Thompson wildfire has burned more than 3,000 acres in Northern California, and is zero-percent contained. Some 13,000 residents have been ordered to evacuate.
