Driving the new GWM Tank 500 seven-seat hybrid 4WD – I’m driving the entry Lux model at $66,490 drive-away which undercuts traditional rivals by a healthy margin – a vehicle loaded to the hilt with comfort, convenience and technology but lacking finesse in a number of areas. The GWM Tank 500 features a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, an electric motor and 1.76kWhour battery driving through a nine-speed automatic, selectable four-wheel drive, and a locking rear differential. Off road more than competent in a body that weights 2.6 tonne with a braked towing capacity of 3,000kg. Given its weight the hybrid assistance is minimal, and it takes some time to recharge the battery by coasting and braking. GWM quotes economy at 8.5L/100km – I couldn’t get anywhere near that figure despite a good mix of city and country driving. Chinese vehicles generally lack finesse in their active driving elements and the suspension feels unsettled with average ride quality, the weight of this body on ladder frame chassis making the suspension work hard when cruising while brake performance at times less than inspiring. A value buy yes but to me lacking the polish of the established opposition. Well supported with a seven-year/unlimited km with capped price servicing, battery warranty eight-years warranty.
