The pressure produced from the stroke plasma, which is much greater than the pressure of the surrounding atmosphere, causes the channel to expand at supersonic speeds, ultimately producing a sound wave heard as thunder. #### Plasma and Lightning The plasma channel created during lightning is an example of terrestrial plasma in action. Plasma is the fourth state of matter and is a highly ionized gas.
