Группу Space очень любили в Советском Союзе, потому что ее музыка вовсю крутилась в заставках и фоном на радио и ТВ. Плюс она была идеологически безопасной для страны, где в 60-е каждый мальчуган мечтал стать космонавтом. А еще у Советского Союза были очень хорошие отношения с покинувшей НАТО Францией (оттуда в нашем прокате фильмы с Бельмондо, Ришаром, Депардьё и Луи де Фюнесом). Француз из Княжества Монако — Дидье Маруани — получил классическое музыкальное образование и до того, как войти в зал электронной славы, пел в сольных пластинках о любви, интересовался синтезаторами, слушал работы изобретателя музыки шумов Пьера Шеффера и писал разную музыку на заказ. Вот французское ТВ запускает программу о космосе и 24-летний Маруани привлекается для записи мелодии к заставке. Он пишет Magic fly — трек, который его прославит, но который не утвердит руководство лейбла для издания на пластинке. (Да, песня хорошая, но не наш формат.) Вместе с Жаном-Филиппом Илиеско де Гримальди, который и подкинул заказ на Magic fly, они заходят с другой стороны: не разрывая контракт с первым лейблом, они продают трек другой компании, образовывают группу Space, сам Дидье (чтобы не палиться) подписывает треки именем «Экама», а продюсер отвечает за продвижение группы и остается в тени. Целый год Space в составе 4 человек выступает в серебристых скафандрах, их лица закрывают шлемы. Их сингл Magic fly становится № 1 в 15 странах, их первые два альбома, оба вышедшие в ‘77 году, жадно раскупают любители доступной электронной музыки, которая внезапно оказалась мелодичной. Инопланетные костюмы, что хорошо подходили по тематике, служили еще одной цели: никто из первого лейбла не должен знать, что Маруани левачит. «Только через год, — вспоминает Дидье, — я попросил компанию аннулировать мой певческий договор и потом смог открыто объявить, что это именно я основатель и пишу музыку для группы Space». Первый концептуальный альбом помимо нарочито космической темы, содержит заигрывания с прифанкованной соул-музыкой — Маруани не скрывает, что Carry on, turn me on был записан для американского рынка, где песню издали отдельной пластинкой, а она потом стала хитом в черных клубах США. Эта тема продолжится и в последующих альбомах Space, где музыки будет поменьше, а вокала побольше. Группа теряла космический шарм и открыто дрейфовала в сторону обычной поп-музыки. Все закончилось очень быстро: после трех альбомов, в ’78-м, Маруани решает дать большой концерт у Эйфелевой Башни. Он получает официальное разрешение властей и вовсю начинает рекламировать предстоящий лайв. Но за месяц до назначенной даты вмешивается продюсер группы и концерт отменяет (по слухам, из-за дороговизны мероприятия). Скандал и позор. Дидье хочет уволить продюсера, но выясняется, что ушлый Жан-Филипп зарегистрировал группу Space на себя и основатель может уходить вон. Последний альбом, Deeper zone, в ‘80 году записывали усеченным составом уже без Дидье и это была уже окончательная смесь американского фанка а-ля Глории Гейнор с британским прог-роком а-ля «Пинк Флойд». Только через 20 лет после затяжных судов и взаимных препирательств Маруани забрал себе право издаваться и выступать под именем Space. Надо сказать, что ни до выигрыша суда, ни после — Маруани не смог выпустить ничего интересного. Даже основанный по горячим следам Paris France Transit не приблизился к хитам и мелодиям первого альбома Space. Только отдалился. Не говоря уже о последующих пластинках.…
