Jera also addresses the fear of being on camera and provides tips for overcoming it. She introduces the concept of secret sauce in content and explains how it can help businesses connect with their audience. Jera encourages taking messy action and offers guidance on getting started with short-form video. Takeaways Video strategy is the foundation of a successful social media presence. Today in this episode of the podcast, we’ll be unpacking one of the common things that I often hear from early stage video strategists, particularly when they've established a reputation as a video producer. So if this is you, this is gonna be super valuable for you as well. The thing that I often hear time and time again is the idea that I've built my business around producing video content for clients. They come to me to make, to get the videos made that I've been known to make and in the style that I'm known to make them. And I understand the value of helping our clients develop a better strategy behind their content, better execute their content so that the content that I produce actually gets results. But they say to me, how do I transition the conversation with my clients to be more around strategy first rather than them just coming to me for video? Well, whatever that conversation looks like for you, I'm sure it's probably a conversation you've either had or you've experienced before or maybe you feel that you will have in the future. So what I want to do in this episode is share with you some ideas that I have and that I've executed and that have worked for me in order to really smoothly and take control of that conversation and smoothly move people towards thinking about strategy and thinking about you and the value that you can provide their business as a video strategist. Welcome to 2023! Over the next two weeks, I'll be bringing back for you some of my favourite interviews in 2022 season of the show in what I am calling my "best of" series. This week I am bringing back Maxwell Finn back in episode 252 to talk about how we can unlock the power of TikTok for 2023.
Building a business can be tough. For many of us, particularly us creative entrepreneurs, we started our business as a way to do what we loved, and hopefully figure out a way to get paid for it. But before long it became clear that in order to build a sustainable business, and not go crazy, we need to get the right team in place around us. That team can mean staff / employees / contractors sure, but also I believe a critical ingredient to business growth team is the board of advisors you surround yourself with who are OUTSIDE of your business. And in today’s episode I’ve invited one of the members of my Strategy Board mastermind and coaching program to share his video business growth story and in particular how being a part of a Board has helped him grow. In this episode we cover: A short intro to Bill and his business. The types of clients he serves. What made him start his business. The challenges he faced in the first couple of years. The challenges he encountered as his business grew. How he addressed his challenges as he developed his video business. How being part of a mastermind meant for his business. One of the key changes in the world of video marketing that has emerged over the last few years has been the rise of short-form video. With all the major platforms now prioritising and focussing on short-form it really is no longer just something some businesses do, but it really should be something that all businesses are starting to embrace. And in today’s episode I’ve invited one of the world's leading paid advertising experts to the show to hear the story of how he’s adapting to short-form video and what you can learn from this. Jon is an accidental marketer and advertising educator who launched jonloomer.com in 2011 after two layoffs. He found a niche in advanced Facebook advertising beginning in 2012. His experience with Facebook goes back to his years with the NBA when the league partnered with Facebook in 2007. His business is built around educating advertisers on the tools, skills, and strategies that they need to succeed. He is now in the process of adjusting his business and brand to the ever-changing landscape, now focusing more on short-form video via TikTok and Reels, no matter how uncomfortable that may make him. He is a baseball fan and stats nerd who shares his love of the game with his three boys. In this episode we cover: The biggest shift Jon has seen in Facebook/Instagram advertising space over the last 5 years. His first impressions/thoughts about short-form videos. The hesitations as a marketer he has to go all in. What’s changed for him. What opportunity traditional businesses have with short-form video. How businesses can measure success and ROI. The things he learned as a marketer in starting on the short-form video journey. The impact he believes that short-form video platforms are having (going to have) on the advertising industry more generally. This might be a little controversial but hear me out. I believe that in 2023 for certain businesses LESS professional video could actually do way MORE for your business. What I’m going to discuss in today’s episode came from a suggestion from listener Kathryn - @aguideto_socialmedia who has been struggling to convince her clients of the value of lower production value DIY videos as part of their strategy. Now, don’t get me wrong. There is absolutely a critical place in an effective full funnel video strategy for professional video production. Just as you wouldn’t try to sign write your own car, print your own business cards or sew your own staff uniforms, allocating a percentage of your marketing budget each year to professional video content is a must. However, for so many businesses there is so much untapped VALUE to be gained by embracing DIY video content across an organisation. And I feel this trend is only going to continue... There’s no ignoring the rising impact that vertical-first, short form video social platforms are having on the world of video marketing. Businesses are fast shifting their perspective of TikTok from being a teenage dancing, trend hopping, viral shopping, flash in a pan to now seeing it’s increasing value as an advertising platform with under-indexed audiences ready to target with their advertising dollar. But as video producers, how should we be thinking about advertising creative for TikTok? What role can we have in helping our clients get an ROI from the platform, and really, is TikTok the new Facebook? All that and more in today’s episode… and it’s a good ‘un. Let’s get stuck in. In this episode we cover: A short intro to Maxwell and what got him into digital advertising, specifically TikTok. What’s the opportunity right now for brands on TikTok. His recommendation for business whether to do an organic or paid strategy focus. How producing creative is different for ads on TikTok as opposed to Facebook/IG. Formula to follow for creative. The right balance between Awareness and DR on TikTok. How advertisers should deal with creative fatigue on such fast moving platforms such as TikTok. Majority on TikTok has been UGC type of content, how can a brand create content that would attract attention and sales and keep identity? How TikTok ad performance is measured. What is the contribution of that channel to all revenue? His recommendation for people to stay ahead with what’s working on TikTok (without being on the platform 12 hours every day!) Have you ever been to a library where they’ve removed the front covers on all the books? Or to a grocery store where everything is in unlabelled, brown cardboard boxes? It’s no surprise that it’s how we label and present things to an audience that can make or break its success. And when it comes to video content on YouTube, the title of the video is one of the most important things to get right. Jake Thomas is a YouTube title nerd. He's written 1,000s of YouTube titles that have generated millions of views. He runs the Creator Hooks newsletter where he breaks down why viral videos worked so you can use those same ideas for your channel. He also runs a dog blog and dog YouTube channel where he tests his title and thumbnail theories. In this episode we cover: A short intro to Jake and what got him into Youtube. Why he believes titles are so important. Which is more important - title or thumbnail. The most common mistakes people make. What ingredients make for an effective YouTube title, How often titles should be changed or test different titles and how we know when we have the best one. The difference in what works between business YouTube channels and YouTubers. How should businesses publishing on Youtube be thinking about their titles in relation to their content. No matter what stage you are at right now, getting super clear on what your business is and who you want to serve is a critical foundation for business planning and ultimately success. And, as a Video Strategist, our role for our clients is often to help them gain this clarity too. And it all starts with a hedgehog. Recently in my Accredited Video Strategist Program, we’ve been working a lot on gaining clarity on audiences and particularly positioning our Video Strategy businesses in the right way for the right types of clients, and it’s really interesting to me how we all have different views on the type of business we’re aiming to build and who we are wanting to work with. But let me tell you, the clarity, and growth from that clarity that is coming out through the program over the last few weeks has been seriously awesome to see. So in this episode, I’m going to share with you an approach you can take to getting super clear what your business is all about, and in particular what type of clients and projects you will want to attract to work with you. In celebration of 250 episodes of the podcast, take a screenshot of your review, and email it to support@engagevideomarketing.com and we’ll hook you up with a surprise bonus :) If you found this episode of value I’d love for you to reach out and let me know on Instagram @engage_ben or email podcast@engagevideomarketing.com Ben Amos LinkedIn Ben Amos Instagram Ben Amos Twitter Rate the Engage Video Marketing Podcast on iTunes…
Have you ever wondered what it takes to build an audience, and then a business using TikTok? The fact is that the idea of what a social media influencer is today, is quite different to the early days of influencers and the path to building a business based off you, your content and your personality is available to everyone. But there is some secret sauce and that’s what we’re going to learn more about in today’s episode. Known as ‘That British Girl’, Jordana Grace is a Comedy Content Strategist. She’s a writer, speaker, comedian and amateur croissant connoisseur. She continually pursues her love of making people laugh, spending her days highly caffeinated creating comedic masterpieces for various brands and charities through her own company. She is also incredibly humble. On TikTok, her series ‘Things they should tell you before coming to Australia’ has become an international hit with tourists and Aussies alike. And even created a course on ‘How to move to Australia’, to help people around the world move to paradise. The Australian public has embraced her dry British humour with open arms, even though she keeps questioning their ways. As that British girl in Australia, she’s living her best life. Whether that’s looking for a husband without a mullet (dramatically decreasing the list of potential Aussie suitors) or searching for that perfect croissant – it’s safe to say she’s made a home down under.…
In 2021, TikTok overtook google.com as the most trafficked site on the internet. And unless you’ve been firmly stuck with your head in the sand over the last 12 months particularly, I’m sure you recognise that TikTok simply can’t be ignored in a video strategy today. But is it really still the wild wild west of social media platforms? How can “real” businesses use TikTok to drive genuine business results. How is TikTok paid advertising something that we should be paying attention to? I know you’ve got questions about TikTok,I know I do! So in this episode, I’ve invited an expert TikTok marketer to share more. He even co-wrote the book about it. In this episode we cover: A short intro to Dennis and what he does. When TikTok first came on his radar. His early impressions of the platform. Where he feels TikTok is at right now as a business/marketing tool. You co-authored a book “Tiktok Advertising: How to Access 1 billion people in 10 minutes” - bold claim… is it really 10minutes? TikTok organic or TikTok advertising - where should businesses start? How is the mindset or approach for businesses different on TikTok vs legacy social platform? Algorithms? Trends? Ad types and strategy?
