Gene Baur is the founder of Farm Sanctuary, a place of rescue, refuge, and adoption for hundreds of farm animals each year. Farm Sanctuary shelters enable visitors to connect with farm animals as emotional, intelligent individuals. Gene has also led campaigns to change laws about animal treatment and taken undercover photographs of farms, stockyards, and slaughterhouses, documenting deplorable conditions. His pictures and videos exposing factory farming cruelties have aired nationally and internationally, educating millions about the plight of modern farm animals, and his rescue work inspired an international farm sanctuary movement. Once called “the conscience of the food movement” by Time magazine, Gene walks the walk and talks the talk when it comes to food and animal rights. Jay and Gene discuss the political and cultural steps that will bring about the end of factory farming and a healthier approach to animals and food. ×Resilience is possibly the most important trait you need to develop to become the best entrepreneur you can be. Day to day, mental resilience and long term resilience are key to your success.
Execute your strategy better than anyone else and none of your competitors will matter.
Founders and entrepreneurs believe they need all sorts of things to supercharge their work. What we all need is better and more sleep. The longer you sleep the longer you live!
What exactly are the rules for negotiating prices? Are there specific products that we're allowed to negotiate? Does a certain type of person negotiate?
Are you buying things you don't need? Are you spending money on services that don't help your business really achieve goals? Do you even know what you want out of your business? Be honest.
What kind of impression do you leave on people after an altercation? Think about your last argument. Did it end well?
If you love a brand or product support them with your hard earned money. If you don't they may close down.
Doing the basics right can change your business. Be honest about what you're screwing up and fix those basics.
I love the pain associated to running a business. Without pain it would all be too easy and everyone would do it. Enjoy the pain, it's necessary!
I often find myself doing work that belongs to my team. It's completely my fault. It's something in working on!
Set your standards and stick to them. Dropping your standards will screw you over.
Your friends influence you more than you realise. Think about who you're spending time with.
Do you believe in your business enough to push on through an audience of one?
Emails make more problems more often. Phone calls can solve things with a personal touch.
Bad handwriting makes me hate note taking. Like bad basics can make you hate business.
The things you choose every day are the things you prioritise every day. Same goes for your business.

Do. Fail. Learn. Repeat.

It's tough to be in front of a screen all day. It leaves me uninspired and mentally fatigued. Sometimes walking away is the best option.

Do. Fail. Learn. Repeat.

I challenge you to speak less, listen more and ask questions.

All I see on social media is how amazing the life of an entrepreneur is. Unless I'm doing it wrong (which is likely) everyone else is lying!
Sometimes the meaty, tough philosophical questions need to be dealt with upfront even if you are a company of 1.

Do. Fail. Learn. Repeat.

Offering an upsell shouldn't be optional. Always upsell!
Do you use your business as a place to stand for or against things? I'm unsure...

Is reading business books driving you insane? Me too.
