On this installment of Discussions on Psychoanalysis, Dr. Susan Kasouf – a licensed psychoanalyst in New York – joins Grégoire Pierre and Edgard Francisco Danielsen on a discussion on climate change from a psychoanalytic perspective. During the podcast we explore with Susan themes like “the more than human environment,” a way of talking that does not separate us off but acknowledges that we are inseparable from the environment, and “catastrophic thinking,” not as a sign of pathology but as an appropriate response to the magnitude of the damage to planet earth, i.e. loss on a scale not experienced before. We ponder questions like the role of the analyst in the containment and processing of catastrophic thinking; what is the movement from one-person to two-person psychology, and beyond with the inclusion of the social matrix; what are the connections between fantasy, reality, narcissism, and denial in the context of climate change. This is the first of a two parts podcast.
