Episode 283: Cole Porter and Jazz, Part 3
Manage episode 435229635 series 2150622
This is the last of my three part series all about Cole Porter and his music---and why jazz musicians love him.
I was inspired for this episode by Ted Gioa's delightful boook, The Jazz Standards, where he gives us stories behind the songs and recommends some of the most interesting versions.
You'll hear:
- All Of You, by Miles Davis.
- You'd Be So Easy to Love, by Edmonton's P.J. Perry with Kenny Barron
- Just One Of Those Things, by Ella Fitzgerald
- Just One Of Those Things, by Coleman Hawkins with Teddy Wilson
- Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye, by Theo Bleckmann and Ben Monder
- I Love You, by Mike Stern
- Miss Otis Regrets, by Gregory Porter
- Love For Sale, by Billie Holiday with Oscar Peterson
- You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To, by Cecil Taylor
- You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To, by Suzannah Adams (from Victoria, B.C.)
You'll also hear how he had determined that one of those tunes was going to be a "Jewish song". And another one came from a musical where Igor Stravinsky wrote the ballet music. And another he wrote at a party after he heard a cowboy's lament song on the radio and wanted to parody it.
