Welcome to Creating Structure Podcast # 49 with Lisa Lococo Smith of the Kawneer Collaborative. Lisa has an interesting path to the curtain wall industry, but always her work has centered around the people part of business; marketing, hospitality, sales, business development. Always positive, Lisa "chooses joy," and "choose happiness." You'll feel it in this discussion. We talk about Lisa's background, working with different types of people, sales, rejection, positivity, curtain wall, unitized curtain wall, Kawneer, trends, and more. We talk about the association and commonality with people, whether tending bar at The West End Tavern, or interacting with clients on a glazing project. We talk about her non-traditional path, which is not uncommon to this industry. This was recorded in September 2023, but the information and context is relevant to any time. We cover a lot of ground here and I'll just let the podcast speak for itself. Enjoy! Welcome to the energy discussion on the Creating Structure Podcast with Mark Schow, PE, and David Kent, LEED AP, Director of Consulting at Wheaton Sprague Mark Schow, is a PE, founder & principal with ElevatedDesign.Boston Using Less Energy. By Design. He has worked on systems for a variety of building types. Saving energy through unique solutions and out of the box thinking is what drives him. David Kent, LEED AP, is Director of Building Envelope Consulting with https://www.wheatonsprague.com . David leads the consulting division at WS and is experienced in a wide variety of building types and cladding systems. We talk about Energy issues; Massachusetts- Stretch Code, Boston's BERDO- Energy Mandates, NY Local Law 97, and more. We discuss the relevance, importance, & often-overlooked interplay between HVAC and Building Enclosure systems. How can building energy use be optimized in new and existing buildings not only in MA, but anywhere? Massachusetts became the first state to adopt an above-code appendix to the "base" building energy code-the "Stretch Code". It emphasizes energy performance, as opposed to prescriptive requirements, and is designed to result in cost-effective construction that is more energy efficient than that built to the "base" energy code . BERDO Buildings account for nearly 70% of greenhouse gas emissions in Boston. The 2021 amendment to BERDO gives the City authority to set emissions standards for large existing buildings. The emissions standards will decrease over time, with all buildings achieving net zero emissions by 2050. How do these things affect the building owner. Where do they start? Energy mandates and thermal efficiencies are not going away. Listen, engage, comment, and let's keep the conversation going. Welcome to Creating Structure Podcast # 45 with Ethan Bull, co-founder of ProAssisting, re-imagining Executive Support. Through ProAssisting, Ethan leverages his 25+ years as a Sr. Executive Assistant to manage top-level, remote Executive Assistant (EA's) who serve clients ranging from 'next generation' CEO's who need support but want technology to enable that partnership to former CEOs and current BOD members who want the high-level support their used to but don't need an on-site, full-time employee. With his wife Stephanie Bull https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephaniebull/ CEO and Co-Founder of Pro-Assist they "wrote the book on remote executive assistance." As noted in their website, "More and more people are looking for remote jobs; however, before remote work became the norm, we provided our clients with a remote and fractional executive assistant for administrative support as a cost-effective alternative to hiring an assistant in-house. Now, more than ever, our process is helping executives, business owners, and entrepreneurs thrive under challenging circumstances in a fast-paced environment." Ethan is refreshing, insightful, candid, and helpful in his insight and background. If you have thought that you couldn't afford to hire an EA, think again. Listen to hear more about Ethan, his EA experience and journey, approach to fractional and full time remote EA support, and more. Thanks for listening! Welcome to the first of a sub-series we will run intermittently entitled "Facades That Inspire," within the Creating Structure Podcast. This one is with my colleague and friend Mr. David Kent, LEED AP, Senior Design Consultant at Wheaton Sprague Beginning his career in London, David has worked in exterior restoration, and curtain wall consulting for about two decades. He received a degree in Building Surveying in the UK, which focuses on the after care and adaptation of existing buildings and exteriors. His work experience spans a full range of construction typologies from social housing to high profile NYC land-marked properties such as the Park Avenue Armory and The Knox Hat Building at 452 Fifth Avenue and more. David's experience has lead to a thorough understanding of not only building exteriors, but their construction, operations, and systems of interiors. Mr. Kent brings his expertise and strong communication skills to every aspect of his work. Facades That Inspire, (enabling facades that inspire is our core purpose at Wheaton Sprague) can take many forms. While we've done monumental, visible, noteworthy custom glazed curtain wall systems on new and existing buildings, in this discussion we highlight a masonry facade on an alley wall, part of an 1800's vintage building in Boston. Why is it important, what were the issues, how was it restored? Listen to the discussion for the case study. And much thanks to our client, and architect, Olivia Dube, AIA, Owner and Principal Tact and Grit Design Co. https://www.tactandgrit.com/ The Guest and Colleague: Mr David Kent, LLED AP: Linked In: https://www.linkedin.com/in/david-kent-179b2534/ Architect: Olivia Dube, AIA LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/olivia-dube-aia-0b42b663/ Host: John L Wheaton , PE, CEO WSE Inc; Creating Structure Podcast Host, Connector Blog: https://johnlwheaton.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-wheaton-pe-leed-ap-0694886 Twitter: https://twitter.com/JohnLWheaton1 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/johnlwheaton1/ Wheaton Sprague and Affiliates: Company: https://www.wheatonsprague.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/wheatonsprague Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wheatonsprague/ Audio Production, Mixing, Engineering: BVS Productions LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/budget-video-solutions/ Website: https://www.bvsfilmproductions.com/…

Born in The Netherlands, Arnold holds a Master of Science in Advanced Architecture Design from Columbia University and a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Southern California. Arnold is a California licensed architect, a member of the AIA, and a LEED-Accredited Professional. Welcome to Creating Structure Podcast #42 with Dan Shields. Having known Dan for a while now, and having worked with him in the past, I know him as a voracious learner, high energy guy, a creative problem solver, and a person that is unafraid to try new things. Dan's story and ascension is inspiring and tangible. From his beginnings in the metals, curtain wall, fabricated products, glazing industry sweeping floors in the shop, to running CNC equipment and saws, to project management, to estimating, to sales, sales management, to executive leadership, and more, there's some good lessons to learn from his experience. We also share some relevant industry content and advice in this discussion. Dan is the President of Fabricated Products Group (FPG) and has approximately 25 years of industry experience in the metals, facade, curtain wall, panel, architectural component and supply industries. So you think fasteners are boring? Maybe to some, but that may be because their importance is not recognized clearly. Everything matters in life, business, work, and construction, from the small details to the big. Fastener elements (screws, nuts, bolts, rivets, etc., etc.) hold together buildings, building components, and keep things secure. Often the last thing to be thought of and purchased, fastening devices need to be considered throughout the design process, and specified as early as is practical in the engineering, procurement, fabrication and construction process. Welcome to Creating Structure Podcast No. 41 with David Raskoskie. David is more than an "account representative." David is a value-adder, strategic partner, relationship builder, problem solver, and understands how to help client support their needs for bolts, screws, fasteners of all types. David's primary focus is on curtain wall and cladding systems of all types, particularly aluminum and glass or other infill components. We "go to school" for a bit on connecting devices, relationship selling, cold calls, fastener history, hydrogen embrittlement, product development and more. Enjoy the show! Kevin Carey is on the move, filled with energy, enthusiasm, working with vision and purpose. I won't be surprised if this episode soars to number one. Kevin is a Christian, husband, father, son, friend, mentor, coach, speaker, construction entrepreneur, executive, and more. Kevin grew up in the Chicago area, on the south side and suburbs. His father was (and still is) a union caulker, so Kevin figured he would go into the trades after high school. However, his mom wanted him to at least apply and consider college. Following the lead of a friend, Kevin applied and was accepted by Illinois State University. After graduating with a degree in business and entrepreneurship, Kevin entered work-life. Starting at Menard's, he moved quickly from there into the specialty subcontracting business with D & M Architectural, then Alliance Glazing, then Dynamic Glass, rising from entry level to business development and eventually to the level of Executive Vice-President, in only 15 years. In September of 2022, however, Kevin left Dynamic Glass and went full time with the company (I say movement) he founded and created, Mountain Movers. Kevin provides coaching, mentoring, email news letters, workshops, planning, speaking and more. Kevin is the host of 17Twenty Podcast, on air since 2020. Kevin is active in TEXO and is currently Chairman of the Board for the non-profit Texas-based construction organization. I am grateful to have had an hour + of Kevin's time. In this episode it was my pleasure to welcome Mr John Skok, RA, Architect. Of course we talk about John's background and journey into architecture, but the main focus of this episode is urban architecture, and specifically Detroit architecture. We talk about what John refers to as "The Detroit Opportunity." Starting in college, John has devoted many years to work specifically in Detroit, both in repurposed and new buildings. But there's a strong emphasis here on urban renewal, reclaiming or repurposing buildings, and the momentum John has seen build over the course of two-plus decades in his work with McIntosh Poris Architects. Enjoy the the architect's perspective and view point as we journey together. Thanks for listening! Welcome to the podcast, the one, the only, Mr. Andrew Haring, VP, Business Development, NGA (The National Glass Association.) We had some fun together on this episode, and there's also a lot of insights into Andrew's path, experiences, views of marketing, development in the glass industry, and more. I heard a man of principal, who really expresses humility and gratitude, to go with his knowledge and experience. Andrew started as a graphic designer, and quickly moved from the architectural services world into the CR Laurence Company (now part of OBE) eventually rising to the role of Vice President of Marketing. Andrew has been the VP of Business Development for NGA for 4 years now. He's a frequent presence on social media, especially LinkedIn and Twitter. Andrew has a great sense of humor and we enjoy some sparring from time to time. We talk in some depth about marketing, and the differences between marketing, business development, and sales. We talk glass industry and what NGA is all about as well. And this episode would not be complete without talking about our expanding league of GRILLING, as in cooking meat over charcoal. There's special event being planned also around this activity at Glass Build. Listen to the very end! Enjoy the show, leave a comment, share with a friend. "Truly transparent solar" I repeat "Truly Transparent Solar" Welcome to this discussion around innovation, proof of concept, formation, process, technology, advancement and growth with Miles Barr and David Maikowski of Ubiquitous Energy. Ubiquitous means "everywhere" and this solar technology could literally be "everywhere" glass surfaces reside. Ubiquitous Energy is a truly transparent BIPV technology like a "Low-E" glass coating, yet creates energy from the sun. Miles Barr is a founder, inventor, former CEO and now CTO of Ubiquitous Energy. David Maikowski is the Director of Channel Development. Listen to this discussion about the potential "game-changer" technology, applications, and markets, innovation and more. I'll let the interview speak for itself. Leave a comment, share, and spread the word. Listen and enjoy! Welcome to Podcast #18. Shaun Blott grew up in Western Canada, born and raised around Calgary, Alberta. Shaun is an expert in two major categories. One of those categories is sales, and this interview has some real "nuggets" of wisdom and practical application that can apply in any scenario, whether doing direct sales or managing a sales group. Shaun has experience in both, along with retail sales and B2B sales in construction products. Much to be gained here. The second category is embedded concrete devices. Shaun is the national sales manager for Jordahl, USA, a manufacturer of concrete embeds and more. Shaun started in a form of an entrepreneurial venture when in 2009, just 12 years ago, he was charged with developing the distribution channels and buying network for Jordahl products. Prior to this time Jordahl had zero sales in the USA. We walk through a variety of topics about the above including everything from sales, sales strategies, gaining trust in the engineering community, glaziers, architecture, coming to the USA from Canada, some product history, building "skin" vs "building skeleton" vs. "building connective tissue." Oh, and I cant forget hockey (Shaun is a hockey fan), Stanly Cup predictions, and a little history of the Cleveland Barron's, the old Cleveland Arena, and stick-day at the hockey game. There's something for most everyone in this. Listen, comment, enjoy! This episode welcomes Mr. Patrick MacLeamy, Architect, Author, Chairman, Fellow AIA, and so much more. This podcast truly inspires. Patrick grew up in an industrial town in Southern Illinois, and went to architecture school at the University of Illinois. Starting as a project designer at HOK Architects, then a single office in St Louis, Patrick rose to CEO of the company during a career that spanned 50 years. Patrick interviewed with and initially worked under HOK's Gyo Obata, (the "O") architect, the son of painter Chiura Obata. In 1955, Mr. Obata co-founded HOK with George Hellmuth, and George Kassabaum. Patrick discusses the foundational structure for HOK and how it was fundamental to their growth and success. In addition, we get into the formation of buildingSMART , the worldwide authority driving transformation of the built environment through creation & adoption of open, international BIM standards. We talk about "the MacCleamy Curve" and how it relates to BIM. There's also formative discussion around principles for how to successfully manage and grow a professional services firm. Patrick talks about strategies to deal with downward cycles in the economy. Along the way we also discuss many other topics: Generational architects and builders His VW Beetle getting him to and from interviews Washington University, St Louis, School of Architecture Internment camps in WWII Dealing with bankers Paying off Credit lines Designing with budget in mind Putting the architect back in the center of society Noble buildings Health and wellness and more Listen, enjoy, leave a comment! Welcome Daniel Winterich to Episode #16 of the Creating Structure Podcast. Dan is an architect, artist, and helps architects, designers, and building owners distinguish their projects by providing commissioned art, architectural glass, sculpture, water features, and building-integrated art installations. Dan is a 5th generation glass artisan and grew up in his family's business specializing in church interiors, including stained glass installations, and complete interiors. From his LinkedIn profile, Jim Maxwell says, "Daniel Winterich brings to every project his keen intuition, creativity, and sensitivity to the clients dreams and desires. It is in his genetic make-up it seems (being a 5th generation glass artisan) as he brings those dreams and desires to light through his glass creations." This is an excellent description of Dan's insight and capability. Raised in Chesterland, Ohio, Dan's path took him to Cincinnati, Germany, and then California. Dan has a BS degree in Interior Design from the University of Cincinnati. Dan is thoughtful, creative, interesting and well-studied. You'll note the measured tone of the conversation and clear answers. Interestingly, the host, and Dan, go back 43 years, but not as one would think. The connection is revealed later in the podcast as to how they are connected, and how they were re-connected. It's a great story. Listen to the end and you'll hear it. Episode #15 of the Creating Structure podcast is with Jeff Haber, Managing Partner, W & W Glass LLC, Nanuet, New York . W & W Glass is one of the largest union metal and glass erectors in NYC and the largest supplier of structural glass in North America. This episode could be easily described as a primer on the glass and glazing business, relationship building, value-add selling propositions, and company growth. Jeff is one of the Haber family managing partners in this very successful enterprise that has grown from $9M to $200M in revenue since Jeff joined full time in 1990. With over 3 decades in the industry, a quick conversational style, a great memory, and many substantive experiences, Jeff covers topics such as design, engineering, glass industry history, structural glass walls, field logistics, relationship building, sales, estimating, forecasting, trends, and predictions. We cover some "hot topics"about the often misunderstood role of the glazing sub by stakeholder-decision-makers, observations on what's happening in the market right now, COVID19 shifts, mindsets around the realities of embracing new technologies and a "generational sea change" that is upon us. Jeff could teach "intro to the glazing business" and if there was such a college class, this conversation would be a good start. Welcome and enjoy the show. In this episode I welcome Diana Darling to the podcast. Entrepreneur, publisher, co-founder, founder, idea generator, president, influencer, event developer, and more can be used to describe Diana professionally. Like many of our guests, her path is interesting. From Texas to London to New York, and points between, Diana has a unique path. You'll hear about it in the podcast. I met Diana through one of the first Facades + events, one of her education and networking venues. I have enjoyed getting to know her over the years. Diana, with her husband and business partner, William "Bill" Menking ( 1947-2020,) founded the AN Media Group and The Architect's Newspaper. There are other businesses within the AN Media umbrella including CE Strong, AN Interior and TECH +. Diana says on her LinkedIn profile, "The best part of being a business owner is networking with other AEC business owners." She and AN are providing critical thinking in architecture, buildings, and planning, art, urban design, and more, along with bringing together "communities" through the publishing and the event venues. Diana's energy is a big draw and her influence is measurable. As typically is the case, we discuss quite a few things and romp through various topics. Welcome Barbara Kotsos to the show. I met Barb in 2014 just after she joined Giroux Glass. If you want to understand more about marketing, what marketer's do, and what a professional marketer is doing in the specialty subcontracting field, this is a "must listen." It's like a short course on the value of marketing in any business, but the application to subcontracting is compelling. Whether you employ a marketer or not, or if you've thought about it, you'll be thinking even more after listening. Barb has worked in consumer goods, B2C, B2B, new technologies, retail, and now construction. How she got to this point is interesting. She tells the story in our discussion. We talk about Branding, Visibility and Awareness, the differences between marketing, business development, and sales, and more. She attended Claremont Graduate University - Peter F Drucker and Matoshi Ito Graduate School of Management. Her Steele Foundation Fellowship enabled her acting as a teaching assistant/research assistant, including to the late Peter F. Drucker. We "geek out" a bit on the marketing topic. The content is applicable to marketers, business developers, sales people, executives, owners, and others aspiring to become marketers. Barb is also heavily involved with NAWIC , the National Association of Women in Construction https://www.nawic.org/nawic/default.asp . We discuss the male-female gender balance/imbalance in construction as well. Step into the mind of master architect, artist, author, poet, speaker, & business owner, John Marx of Form4 Architects . John is a co-founding partner/Chief Artistic Office at Form4. The firm is best known for shaping the all-amenity tech campus concept in the Silicon Valley. John also designed the area’s first all electric net positive office building. Philosophically, John is a proponent of Second Century Modernism . He paints, writes poetry, serves on the board of the San Francisco Art Institute, & designs Burning Man installations. He advocates for inclusion of Philosophy, Art, and Poetry in the thoughtful making of place. Keenly aware that architecture is a balancing act between self expression & collaboration, he uses the compelling power of form to create emotionally resonant architecture. He lectures widely, has been published in over 100 publications, and is the recipient of over 160 design awards. John and I discuss how artistry drive his expression of buildings, the absurdity of beauty, emotional resonance in buildings. We touch on how the facade typology helps differentiate the building expression. John works to remove barriers in the "art and creative world," encouraging people to utilize creative forms of expression. He communicates this through his definition of art as, " The act of sharing your humanity with others through an expressive medium." John on Sustainability, “The most sustainable things in life are those things you will not throw away because you love them too much”. I think you'll find listening to this to be an excellent learning experience. Enjoy! Welcome to the Creating Structure Podcast #24 . My guest is Mr. Mike Russo, Owner, President and CEO of SPS Corporation. In addition to a lot of "who's who" in the curtain wall and cladding industry world, we cover a lot of ground here on history, current realities, SPS's work, trends, future, and more. We've got Mike's inspiring story of overcoming adversity as a young man, and becoming the 1st person in his family to go to and graduate from college. After graduating from Lycoming College, Mike drove his 1974 Nova to New York City with the goal of working in the advertising industry. It was in NYC that his career in curtain wall started and accelerated quickly. We cover history of different branches from the curtain wall 'tree', and we name drop a lot of folks, some of whom were involved with Mike along the way, some directly, some indirectly; Oscar Drucker, John Stephens, Jeff Heymann (prior guest), Mike Haber (prior guest-Mike get your golf clubs ready), Juan Speck, John Juba, Russell Gardner, and many more mentioned in the talk. Sunday is an appropriate day to post this conversation with Marshall Brandon. This is the first Creating Structure Podcast of it's type to share a "human interest" story outside of the context of building, architecture, facade, but inside the context of everyone, every human life, personally, or professionally. It is a story of hope, renewal, redemption, recovery, deliverance; that with God all things are possible. From Alabama to Youngstown, to Vietnam, to Akron, to prison, prison to restoration, renewal, redemption. It's a story of overcoming abuse, abandonment, anger, addiction, racism, divorce, and more. It's really God's story in Marshall's life. How to be a great employee, how to leave a legacy, from nothing to everything. From hopelessness to hope. Many people know Marshall Brandon, as "Pastor B" or "Pastor Brandon." It didn't start that way. Far from it. Marshall has worked as a ballistics specialist in the military, worked in a steel mill, for a water department, and for 17 years as a stationary engineer. Then more years than that in homeless ministry and then as a pastor. It's not your normal path, but it's his path, Marshall's story; but it's really God's story in Marshall's life. Marshall has a new book coming out in February of 2022, "Someplace to be Somebody: God's Story in the Life of Marshall Brandon," by Lisa Loraine Baker, and published by End Game Press. The book is available for pre-order now. Regardless of your faith platform, or not, the story is real. It's gripping. It's inspiring. Please listen, share, leave a comment. In this Creating Structure Podcast, our 20th Episode, I welcome none other than Mark Zweig. Mark is well known in the AEC industry with Mark Zweig Inc., and having been Founder and Chairman of Zweig Group. Mark is now an "Entrepreneur in Residence" and full-time professor in Entrepreneurial studies in the business college at the University of Arkansas. He also writes blogs and articles regularly, which can be found online and in his social media feeds. Taking a pay cut from his bicycle business to get his first job after MBA school, Mark jumped into the AEC industry in a number of escalating positions involving marketing, HR, and recruiting, prior to starting one of the preeminent AEC Consulting firms at Zweig Group. We "go to school" in this session talking about Mark's path forward, the AEC industry, A/E vs. C differences, buying and selling businesses, balance sheets, achieving 30% year over year growth, changes in staffing and people since COVID19, Mergers and Acquisitions, return on equity, the value of communication, learning how to sell, and more. Mark has been an avid collector of cars, bikes, and motorcycles, which we talk about as well. Also, don't miss Mark's take on "the value of cutting the grass" (literally.) There's much more to glean in this discussion from the past, the present, and the future. Enjoy, share, subscribe, listen, and please share your comments with the Creating Structure Podcast community. Thank you so much for listening!
