On 25th October, counter-culture royalty Steve Hillage and Miquette Giraudy, aka System 7, present an ambient/kosmische treat with their latest LP from their cosmic nom de plume, Mirror System.
It features The Orb’s Alex Paterson, Dan Donovan of Big Audio Dynamite, Marv Brookes, and dub don Paul “Groucho” Smykle. It also features the voice of Allen Ginsberg, a tribute to late friend Manuel Göttsching and a cover of Ry Cooder’s classic ‘Paris Texas’.
Hillage and Giraudy have a long and rich history at the forefront of multiple countercultures. In the 60s, Giraudy worked with feted film director Barbet Schroeder, crossing paths with Pink Floyd. In the 70s Hillage recorded with Soft Machine co-founder Kevin Ayers, then joined legendary proggers Gong, alongside Giraudy. In the 80s, Hillage produced Simple Minds’ groundbreaking albums Sons & Fascination (1981) and Sister Feelings Call (1981), which featured the anthemic instrumental ‘Themes For Great Cities’, which later became a Balearic anthem, championed by Andrew Weatherall, Paul Oakenfold and Danny Rampling.
In the late 80s, the pair formed the techno/trance outfit System 7, which originally also featured The Orb’s Alex Paterson and Youth. As one of the first techno groups to play live, System 7 started off sharing stages with The Orb, and then with Orbital and Underworld at the feted London club Megadog in the early 90s. Veterans of the festival scene, they were involved in setting up the first official dance stage at Glastonbury Festival, where they have played 20 times since 1995.
System 7 studio collaborators have included a Guy Called Gerald, Laurent Garnier and Jam El Mar (of Jam and Spoon).
