Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula and Welcome to Season 08 Episode 76 of Breakfast Bites, by TeivovoSports.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on a sunny and bright Friday morning 22 March 2024.
Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian in the middle of the Blue Continent.
In rugby union: Apart from the Fijian Drua against the NSW Waratahs on Saturday in Lautoka, other Super Rugby Pacific games tonight at 6:05pm Hurricanes vs Rebels Central Energy Trust Arena at Palmerston in New Zealand and at 8:35pm Brumbies vs Moana Pasifika at GIO Stadium in Canberra.
Tomorrow at 3:35pm Chiefs vs Highlanders at FMG Stadium in Hamilton, at 6:05pm the Blues vs Crusaders at Eden Park in Auckland and at 8:35pm it’s the Force vs the Reds in Perth.
In football: The Socceroos took a big step towards the FIFA World Cup 2026 last night, with a 2-0 win against Lebanon in front of 27,026 fans at Commbank Stadium, Parramatta, with Lebanon’s disciplined defence belying their low ranking of 115th in the world.
In SportsBiz: Veteran Australian punter Cameron Johnston has hit the NFL jackpot, signing a massive three-year A$13Million deal with powerhouse outfit the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Originally from Geelong, Johnston was drafted by Melbourne in 2010 but never played a senior AFL game.
In the NRL Multicultural Round: The Panthers thrashed a star-less Broncos herd 12-34 as Nathan Cleary repeated his grand final heroics with another masterclass last night.
But instead of saving his brilliant best for the final 20 minutes, Cleary dominated from start to finish in front of a bumper home crowd of 20,089 fans.
Brisbane were already without Adam Reynolds and Payne Haas in Penrith and then star fullback Reece Walsh left the game bleeding profusely after just five minutes.
Finally, only in America: Major League Baseball fans in the US and Japan woke up to shocking news yesterday of the firing of baseball superstar Shohei Ohtani’s longtime interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, by the Los Angeles Dodgers due to allegations of illegal gambling.
Mizuhara, 39, was let go after media scrutiny intensified on wire transfers from Ohtani's account to a bookmaker.
But what exactly Mizuhara had done and the extent of Ohtani’s involvement remains unclear.
In response to an investigation by The Los Angeles Times, a spokesperson for Ohtani told ESPN that the slugger had transferred funds to cover Mizuhara's gambling debt.
Mizuhara was subsequently interviewed on ESPN where he said that he had asked Ohtani to help him settle his gambling debt last year, which multiple sources say had reached at least US$4.5Million.
"Obviously, Ohtani wasn't happy about it and said he would help me out to make sure I never do this again," Mizuhara told ESPN. "He decided to pay it off for me.
"I want everyone to know Shohei had zero involvement in betting. I want people to know I did not know this was illegal. I learned my lesson the hard way. I will never do sports betting ever again," he said.
Mizuhara explained that Ohtani used his own computer to make the transfers in installments, over several months in the past year, because he didn’t trust the interpreter with the money.
But the following day, Ohtani’s lawyers, the West Hollywood law firm Berk Brettler, released a statement, saying "In the course of responding to recent media inquiries, we discovered that Shohei has been the victim of a massive theft, and we are turning the matter over to the authorities."
After the Berk Brettler statement, Mizuhara said that Ohtani had no knowledge about his gambling debts and that Ohtani had not transferred money to the bookmaker's associate, completely changing his story from before.
Mizuhara was seen in the dugout during the Dodgers’ 5-2 victory over the San Diego Padres in the MLB season opener in Seoul on Wednesday.
He addressed the clubhouse after the game, saying a story was going to come out, that it was all his fault and that he has a gambling addiction, ESPN reported.
MLB players and staff can bet on sports other than baseball, but they must avoid illegal bookmakers or offshore websites. According to the league's rules, placing bets with illegal bookmakers can result in disciplinary action by the MLB commissioner.
Oh boy Ohtani – money, money, money!
And that’s a wrap!
