In Rugby League: Penrith won a record-extending fourth straight NRL premiership, with a 14-6 victory over Melbourne Storm, in a pulsating and dramatic NRL grand final, in front of 80,156 fans at Accor Stadium in Sydney last night.
Ivan Cleary’s side became the first team in six decades to win four straight premierships and the first in the NRL era, running in three tries to one to continue their remarkable dynasty.
The game wasn’t without controversy, however: The NRL’s worst nightmare came true in the 50th minute when Storm Centre, Jack Howarth was denied a go-ahead try in controversial circumstances.
It was sent upstairs as “no try” by referee Ashley Klein and the Bunker official upheld the decision, despite replays appearing to show Howarth grounded the ball.
“I am sure the ball gets down. Now. It is down. It’s on the ground,” Andrew Johns said on Channel 9.
“No one’s going to do this again,” said five-eighth Jarome Luai after his last game for the Panthers before moving to Wests Tigers next season.
“To win one grand final is so special. I can’t put this into words.”
In Football: Manchester United could only grind out a 0-0 draw at Aston Villa yesterday in a Premier League game steeped in speculation about the future of their under-fire Manager Erik10 amid Man U's worst start in the Premier League era.

In UFC: Khalil Rountree Jr entered the fourth round of his challenge for Alex Pereira’s UFC Light Heavyweight title, ahead on the scorecards of UFC307, according to some experts and while others gave the edge to Pereira, it was that close to an upset at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City, Utah yesterday.
But then the Champion from Brazil landed a pair of brutal body shots and then went back upstairs to send Rountree Jr. to the canvas.
Pereira successfully defending his belt for the third time.
And in the WNBA: A study by the National Research Group, conducted among 1074 US sports fans aged 18-64, dug deep into the “Caitlin Clark” effect, generating the following key points:
§ 81% of fans say Clark is the main reason they’ve watched more WNBA this year than they normally do.
§ 64% have heard of Clark, compared to 46% for the Chicago Sky’s Angel Reese, who ranked No. 2.
§ 66% have an overall positive impression of Clark, with 4% negative, which is better than most NBA stars.
§ 72% who follow Clark say that they sympathize with her because of the press attention she’s received, with 60% saying the media treats her unfairly.
§ 59% of Black fans watch the WNBA on at least an occasional basis, compared to just 26% of white fans.
