Kia ora, Talofa lava, Ma’lelei, Bula, Aloha and Welcome to Season 11 Episode 32 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on Wednesday morning 06 November 2024.
Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Blue continent, where it is a humid 22 degrees Celsius again at 5am this morning.
In Rugby Union: Fiji has dropped below Australia and into 10th place in the World Rugby Men’s Rankings, after their record 57-17 thrashing to Scotland at Murrayfield, in the opening round of the Autumn Nations Series.
In Rugby League: Unassuming Tongan Head Coach Kristian Woolf looks like he could finally be the man to smash the Wayne Bennett curse when he takes charge at the Dolphins.
It was amazing watching Tonga’s thrilling victory over the NZ Kiwis, to advance to the Pacific Nations final against the Australians.
And as much as the players deserve huge kudos for what they have achieved, so does Woolf, who has been a key driving force in Tonga’s emergence as a genuine powerhouse of international rugby league.
In Football: UEFA Champions League games today: PSV 4-0 Girona, and underway - Real Madrid vs Milan, Liverpool vs Leverkusen, Borussia Dortmund vs Storm Graz, Sporting CP vs Man City, Lille vs Juventus, Celtic vs Leipzig and Bologna vs Monaco.
In Sports Biz: More than 50,000 runners from 150 countries participated in the TCS New York City Marathon, held Sunday, staged in crisp, sunny, idyllic conditions. But the hilly nature of the New York course prevents this race from ever being a site for world records in the sport.
Each of the Men’s and Women’s top finishers in the open division took home a tidy US$100,000 - claimed by Abdi Nageeye of the Netherlands, and Sheila Chepkirui of Kenya.
Only the Boston Marathon pays out more - US$150,000 to their winners.
In Major League Baseball: According to New York Post MLB insider Jon Heyman, Top free agent hitter Juan Soto's new "magic number" is US$700Million or more — and that’s a solid US$700M, not the record US$700M contract that’s 97 percent deferred that Japanese superstar Shohei Ohtani received from the Dodgers, writes Heyman.
Last winter, Ohtani signed a 10-year, US$700M deal. However, US$680M of that total money is deferred to 2034 until 2043.
Soto has already heard from interested teams - 11 to be exact, but the Toronto Blue Jays, New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies, and the Los Angeles Dodgers are probably the only ones who can make such a deal – with the Favourites being the New York franchises – the Yankees and the Mets.
The Mets are the fan favourites, as team owner Steve Cohen has unlimited funds to spend, in a sport where there is no salary cap!
And that’s a wrap sports fans!
