In boxing: An errant elbow from Sebastian Fundora in the second round, proved to be Tim Tszyu’s undoing yesterday afternoon, with a deep cut to the Australian’s head, a critical turning point, as the towering American claimed a split decision victory 116-112, 115-113, 112-116 at T Mobile Arena, Las Vegas, to become the new unified World Champion at 154 pounds.
It was Tszyu’s first defeat of his professional career.
Meanwhile in the undercard, fellow Aussie Michael Zerafa vowed to “steal the show”, that he would upset WBA Middleweight Champion Erislandy Lara to become a world champion.
Instead it was the brutal left hand of the Cuban Lara that stopped the Australian in brutal fashion, sending Zerafa crumbling to the canvas in the second round.
In rugby league: The NZ Warriors overcame an early injury blow to secure a 20-12 win over Kalyn Ponga and his Newcastle Knights in Auckland yesterday, with Roger Tuivasa-Sheck starring in his return to the No.1 jersey for the Kiwis, topping the metres run at 278M.
Panthers flyer and Dally M Rookie of the Year 2023, Sunia Turuva has put himself on the open market after negotiations with Penrith fell flat.
The Panthers reportedly tabled A$350,000 per-season, but Turuva, who is without a deal past 2024, could reportedly field offers worth around A$500,000 by rival clubs.
