Starting the podcast, how could I not talk about what happened in the US last night with the presidential election? Not that I wanted to dive into politics at all, but the reaction to the results was quite a wild dive into the human experience. Moving along quickly, I then recapped Monday's Oilers game on Amazon Prime, which was the first of four nights we'll have on the streaming platform. From the product to the experience to the presentation, I offered my take on what it was like to watch hockey differently.

Keeping with the Oilers, I kicked off the news with the stunning revelation that Connor McDavid will be back in the Oilers lineup only nine days after suffering an ankle injury on his first shift against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Given that he was supposed to be out of the lineup for 2-3 weeks, seeing him on the top line at Wednesday's morning skate was certainly a surprise. Then again, should we be surprised? If there's one thing Connor McDavid has done repeatedly in his career, it's defying the odds when it comes to his recovery time, and this ankle injury was just the latest example.

Finally, I wrapped up this quick episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about off-leash dogs before wrapping up the show with another round of voicemails. The inbox was quiet but mighty this week, but that didn't mean you fine folks didn't still make me laugh anyway. It's the Wednesday after Game 5, which means a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never is ready to recap the Edmonton Oilers' miraculous comeback while also looking back at the week that was. On today's podcast, I recapped games 3-5, looked ahead at Game 6, what the Oilers need to do to close out the series, and much more. Isn't it amazing how many things can change in a week? When I recorded last Wednesday's episode, the Oilers had just spectacularly lost Game 1 and were about to drop Game 2 even worse somehow. The good news is that sports are the best reality show on earth, and watching our boys come roaring back with three straight wins is almost as good as it gets. I also touched on how great the other first round series have been, and how working through a playoff run can be tough on the body. Turning my full attention back to the Oilers, I started with a recap of games 3-5 and how the Oilers have gotten better with each passing period. That's not to say that they were perfect by any stretch, but Edmonton's ability to crank up their resiliency when it mattered most was an unstoppable force for Los Angeles. There's also the Calvin Pickard effect, as the team clearly enjoys playing in front of a guy who seems like the nicest man on earth. Then there's Evan Bouchard's four goals , Evander Kane's impact , and Leon Draisaitl tying Messier and Gretzky for one of the wildest playoff records ever. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a guest Righteous Sack Beating before wrapping up the podcast with a quality round of voicemails. The voicemail was alive this week, and the messages were very funny, as you could almost feel the rollercoaster of emotions that were going on. It's the Wednesday of Game 2 in Edmonton, which means a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never is ready to get you prepped for the night while looking back at the week that was. On today's podcast, I recapped Game 1 , looked ahead at Game 2, what the Oilers need to do better, and much more. I kicked off this week's episode of BLTN with a recap of what's happened so far. Starting with the Game 1 party at Greta, I wanted to thank everyone who came out for a late start on a Monday and turned the bar into a vibe, even though the game started horribly. But as any good Oiler fan will tell you, the boys haven't exactly had much success in Game 1s historically, but the reaction to the loss was incredible to watch. As for the team itself, there were countless areas where the Oilers needed to improve, at least early in the game. For the first 38 minutes of Game 1, the Oilers looked like they couldn't do anything remotely productive, which allowed the Kings to essentially dominate the first two periods. Even with the loss, the way Edmonton was able to claw their way back from a 4-0 deficit has to have put a seed of doubt in the Kings' minds. Looking ahead at Game 2 , I walked through some of the areas I think the Oilers can improve and how the new line combinations posted this morning could impact that plan. It's the final Wednesday of the regular season, which means a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never is ready to get you prepped for the playoffs. On today's podcast, I'm discussing Oilersnation's playoff plans, what to expect from the Oilers and Kings, and much more. I started this week's Better Lait Than Never episode with a little playoff preview from an Oilersnation content perspective. I walked through what we've got coming for playoff coverage and how excited I am to get the post-season going, even though so many people seem down on our boys right now. Just because we're not travelling to L.A. for Round 1 this year, that doesn't mean we don't still have plenty planned for playoff content. Turning the podcast to the Oilers, I looked ahead at the 4th straight playoff kickoff against the Los Angeles Kings and how I expect this round to be different. Even though I still believe the Oilers can win, there are definitely some concerns going into this series that are new and scary for our boys. I also touched briefly on the Oilers' final regular season matchup against the San Jose Sharks as Connor McDavid looks for his eighth career 100-point season. Given that he's sitting at 99 points on the year and the final game is against the last-place Sharks, I'm feeling pretty good about him getting there. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about Phillip Danault's whining during the intermission about the Oilers trying to hurt Kings players before wrapping up the podcast with a quality round of voicemails. For the first time in weeks, I recorded Better Lait Than Never on the right day and at the scheduled time. It's the gift for your ear feelings that you didn't know you needed. On this week's podcast, we discussed the Edmonton Oilers' injury issues , what to expect from the last five games, and much more. I started the podcast with a random collection of topics, from the stock market insanity to the weather warming up to one of my favourite dating shows, to loop everyone into my varied interests. Am I stupid? Yes. Do I care that I sometimes have the TV-watching habits of a teenage girl? No. I also spoke about how dumb I was last weekend when I went out drinking with my buddies and ended up buying PS5 games that I didn't actually care about. *sigh* Turning the podcast to the Oilers, how could I not start the news by looking at the devastating run of injuries the team is working through right now? It seems like every single night, the Oilers have someone else going down with an injury, and the problem is getting so bad that it almost feels like a black cloud is hanging over this team's head right now. How much difference can another week make? We'll have to hope it's a lot. It's Wednesday Friday afternoon, I'm back from the #NationVacation to Vegas, and Leon Draisaitl got hurt again, which meant there was plenty to discuss in this week's episode of Better Lait Than Never. I started this week's episode of BLTN with a quick recap of the #NationVacation to Vegas that happened this past week and how it was so much fun to hang out with everyone again. What's most amazing about these trips is how many times we get to see the same faces and how when there are new folks, the newbies are immediately welcomed in with open arms by the group. It's one of those magical Nation Citizen-isms you can only experience on these trips, and it's always a blessing to watch firsthand. Turning the podcast to the Oilers, I had to start with the injury to Leon Draisaitl after the future MVP left Thursday's game in the second period with some kind of core(???) looking injury. While we didn't get many updates on what happened with Leon, Kris Knoblauch stated that the superstar will be back before the playoffs and that the injury doesn't appear related to what previously kept him out of the lineup. The good news, though, is that it looks like Trent Frederic might be in the lineup for the first time as an Oiler as early as Saturday against the Kings. Another Wednesday means another episode of Better Lait Than Never is wrapped up, edited, and ready to get you through what's left of the week. The other story that popped around here this week was the quote from Stan Bowman on Hockey Night in Canada that expressed his confidence in the team's ability to re-sign Connor McDavid to an extension . While Bowman didn't get into any details apart from saying he felt confident they would get it done, the GM's words were music to the fanbase's ears. Sticking with contracts, Jacob Chychrun signed a massive extension with Washington yesterday, which led to a discussion about how that deal will affect Evan Bouchard's upcoming contract negotiations. It's Wednesday afternoon, and the Edmonton Oilers are struggling, which means there is plenty to talk about in today's episode of Better Lait Than Never. On this week's podcast, I discuss the Oilers' four-game losing streak, Leon Draisaitl's heater, trade deadline needs, and much more. I kicked off this week's podcast by thanking the Gords for snapping the streak of cold weather we've been battling in Edmonton over the last two weeks. It may be a small thing, but just being able to go outside and walk my dog this week has been a huge win. I also took listeners behind the scenes a little bit about what we're working on ahead of the trade deadline, including our Daily Faceoff Trade Deadline special. Turning the podcast to the Oilers, it doesn't take much searching to see how upset the fanbase is right now after a run of putrid games put the team on their first four-game losing streak of the season. I'm finally back in my comfort cave after a week on the road, which meant I was excited to have the time for a regularly scheduled episode of the Better Lait Than Never. This week, I recapped my trip to Toronto, spoke about The Sheet launch event, and covered all the cool things that are happening with the Oilers. For whatever reason, the Edmonton Oilers' schedule is so weird this season. As a result, we find ourselves in a mini bye week that isn't technically a bye week but is indeed boring us all like one. On the bright side, the lack of games meant more time for shenanigans on this week's episode of Better Lait Than Never. I started this week's podcast by discussing my excitement for this week's #NationVacation. Heading to another city to watch the Oilers play is one of my favourite things to do, and that excitement builds even further when we're going to a place I've never been before. I then changed gears a bit to talk about seeing The Book of Mormon on Friday night at the Jubilee and how it was one of the funniest nights I've had in a long time. If you've never seen that play and are a fan of South Park, you've gotta find a way to see it at least one time. At 2-4-1 through seven games, it's not like the Oilers are down and out or anything like that, but I'm genuinely puzzled that a team this talented can allow this slow start to happen again. Digging into what's gone wrong, I started the news by looking at the losses against Dallas and Carolina . Both of those games were well within reach for our boys, but the lack of goal-scoring is really making it difficult for the team to gain any traction. That said, I also feel like it's a matter of time before Edmonton's luck starts to turn and pucks start going in the net, but it's been painful watching them struggle to get there. Making matters worse, some of our former friends are finding success in new markets while their old stomping grounds continue to struggle offensively. So, even though many of us believe the Oilers will turn things around, this early part of the season has been a tough pill to swallow. As the losses continue to pile up, the fanbase keeps getting more and more restless and louder about voicing their displeasure. It's Thursday afternoon, and that means your favourite post is finally here after making you wait a day longer than usual. Are you excited? Of course you are. I started this week's podcast with a quick run through of our Oilersnation annual planning meetings that I just got home from, which was also the reason why the show was late by a day. Seeing as this was the third year of these annual sessions, it's interesting to see how much the company has grown over the last 36 months and how we're not anywhere close to being done. I also decided this past week that I'm a Vikings fan now, so I walked through that decision and admitted that stretching it out as long as I did was more annoying than it was helpful. From the volunteers to the golfers to the fantastic shape the Millwoods Golf Course was in for our big day, everything about this year's tourney was fantastic. Not only did we raise a pile of money for Gregor's Grads, but we also had a fantastic day together out on the course, and I already cannot wait for next year's tournament. Turning the podcast back to hockey, I started the news with a tribute to Johnny Gaudreau. Even though he was an opponent throughout his career, Thursday night's news was heartbreaking in every possible way. That's why I wanted to spend a few minutes talking about one of the league's best players and how going up against him as often as the Oilers did made for a fantastic rivalry. Even days later, I still can't believe it. Changing gears, the Oilers signed Leon Draisaitl to an eight-year, $112 million contract extension on Tuesday, the news we've been waiting for basically all summer. As an Oilers fan my entire life, I had gotten used to our best players leaving when it came time to sign big deals, but yesterday's news basically erased all those memories from my early fandom. Not only did the Oilers retain one of the best players in the NHL, but this extension basically ensured that Draisaitl will be an Oiler for life, which is something that the older fans haven't experienced before. I'm back from vacation, and the Oilers spent the week wheeling and dealing, so I had plenty to talk about in this week's episode of Better Lait Than Never. The Edmonton Oilers made a big trade today, sending Ryan McLeod and Tyler Tullio to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for Matthew Savoie. In case you didn't know, Matthew Savoie was the Sabres' 9th overall pick in 2022 and is widely regarded as one of the league's best prospects, which makes this deal all the more fascinating. As I like to do when any big Oilers news comes down the pipe, I jumped in the studio for a quick 15-minute reaction episode to the trade and offered a passionate plea to Jeff Jackson to remain on as the team's GM. I'm still trying to wrap my head around how much the Oilers got done in free agency, and it has me excited to see what else is yet to come. Either way, I don't know that I've seen Oilers social media as united as it's been over the last few days, and that positivity is incredibly nice to see only a week after the team fell short in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final. I started off this week's Better Late Than Never by confessing how relieved I am that the NHL season is done and that there's finally some time to recharge. That's not to say that I'm complaining about the Oilers' Cup run — far from it — just that it was a lot of punishment on the body. Without knowing for sure, I'd guess that I probably put on 15-20 pounds over the last couple of months, and now the goal will be to see how quickly I can shed the weight. Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, how could I not start with a tribute to Jeff Jackson? Even though Jackson told everyone he is not interested in being Edmonton's general manager long-term, the guy has done a fantastic job in the role so far. The Edmonton Oilers had a surprisingly big day in free agency despite not having a whole lot of cap space to spend, and that meant a quick 15-minute reaction episode of Better Lait Than Never to break it all down. Whether we're talking about Viktor Arvidsson coming over from the Los Angeles Kings, Jeff Skinner signing on from the Sabres after getting bought out, Mattias Janmark and Connor Brown coming back, or any of the depth moves Jeff Jackson made, the Oilers were significantly busier than any of us expected them to be. Not only did they address their top six forwards in a very real way, but they also added depth to the organization without having to break the bank. Even though it sucks to be so close and still fall short, it's also hard not to feel proud about the way the Oilers finished. I start this week's episode of Better Lait Than Never with a quick recap of my trip to Florida for Game 7. Outside of the result, those were arguably two of the most fun days I've ever had. From the chartered flight down to the mayhem at the Elbo Room on Sunday night, the people we met along the way made the trip worth it even though we flew across the continent for only 36 hours. As always, Oilers fans travel incredibly well, and it was so much fun to see as many of us down there as there were. Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, the team had their end-of-season interviews today, and it was interesting to hear everyone speak about what that run meant to them. Obviously, we all wanted to hear Leon Draisaitl say that he was going to sign an extension ASAP, but it wasn't exactly surprising to hear him say that he needed some time to process what just happened, even though he admittedly loves playing here. It was also fascinating to hear from the likes of Warren Foegele, Connor Brown, and Mattias Janmark, three guys who weren't exactly shy about admitting they wanted to come back. Of course, the NHL is a business at the end of the day, and in the salary cap days, it will be interesting to see how the team navigates their pending UFAs. We also heard a report from TSN's Darren Dreger which stated that Ken Holland will not be back with the organization next year despite initially hearing that he had a role offered to him to stay. Lastly, I wrapped up this week's show with a guest RSB about the Oilers bandwagon and capped off the pod with another round of voicemails ranging from Stanley Cup woes to positive messages and everything in between. Oilers drag the Panthers back to Alberta for Game 6 1:20:27

The Oilers had their backs against the wall after falling behind 3-0 to the Florida Panthers, but the vibes have changed significantly after the boys won their last two games to push the series to Game 6 at Rogers Place. Needless to say, this past week has been emotional. I started out this week's podcast with what was basically a love letter to Edmonton after this city gave us some of the best times of my life over the last handful of days. There's nothing quite like being here when the Oilers are in a playoff push, and that feeling gets cranked up by a factor of 100 in the Stanley Cup Final. Even though everyone was feeling down when the Oilers fell behind by three games, you'd have thought we were up by three with the way everyone parties on Saturday night. Looking back at Tuesday's Game 5 , the Oilers needed to go into Florida and get the job done in a bar where they had yet to win. Led by their captain, the boys did exactly that with what was an imperfect yet incredibly clutch 5-3 win . Now the series turns back to Rogers Place where I expect the crowd to quite possibly blow the roof off. If people thought the crowd was nuts for Game 4, I can only imagine the chaos that is about to happen only a couple of days from now. I'd be lying if I didn't acknowledge the hole the Edmonton Oilers find themselves in after losing both games in Florida to kick off the Stanley Cup Final, but that doesn't mean the series is over. It just means the mountain gets a whole lot tougher to climb. I started this week's podcast with a recap of our trip to Florida, what it was like at the Amarent Bank Arena, what we did on the off day, and what the Oilers need to do to pull themselves back in the series. Despite only being gone for four days, there was a lot going on for the four of us from Nation HQ who made our way down to Fort Lauderdale. We did live shows, wrote a bunch of articles, posted countless social posts, and despite the results, we also mixed in some shenanigans. It’s always amazing to me to see what the voicemail segment of Better Lait Than Never has turned into. When I first started the voicemail, I was hoping that maybe a handful of people would chime in with their takes, but I never expected it to grow to a spot where I turn that one segment into whole episodes. With the Oilers heading to the Stanley Cup Final, however, the BLTN community has a lot to say, and it makes me happy to offer a platform for which they can get it out. Oilers + Stanley Cup Final = OMFG 53:18

We're only days away from the Oilers beginning their quest for the Stanley Cup in the finals, and this off-week has given me all kinds of time to think about the ride it's been just to get here. This season has been one for the books, I'll tell you that much. To kick off the podcast, I started by telling my version of the story of how the Western Conference Final ended. Obviously, we know the Oilers wrapped up the series in six games, but from my perspective, after 16 years of working at Oilersnation, the whole thing felt like a fever dream. Even though my eyeballs were telling me what was going on, it was almost like my brain couldn't comprehend the information it was being fed. After so many years of covering horrible teams, having the Oilers make the SCF feels like we've already won, even though the job is nowhere close to finished, and there's plenty of work left to do. Turning back to the Oilers, there was plenty of news and noise surrounding the team's first trip to the Stanley Cup Final in 18 years, and one such question revolved around their ability to handle the Panthers' physicality. Obviously, this is going to be a much more physical series than the one against Dallas, but does that mean the Oilers won't be able to handle it? It's not like every series has been a cakewalk. We're in the hours leading up to Game 4, and the Oilers find themselves in a familiar, albeit uncomfortable position. Win, and the series is tied, lose, and they'll backed into a corner. That's life in the playoffs when you can't stop shooting yourselves in the foot. I started this week's podcast with a quick recap of our trip down to Dallas and how it was a welcomed change after spending the first two rounds in Los Angeles and Vancouver. Unlike our first two stops, the people in Dallas were incredibly friendly and seemed almost amazed that we would fly all the way to Texas to watch the Oilers play in their rink. We had drinks bought for us, plenty of conversations on what we thought of the city, tips on what to do and where to eat, and to be honest, I had a hard time disliking any of them. Turning back to the Oilers, there was plenty of news and noise surrounding the team after Monday's Game 3 loss, and one guy who took more shrapnel than anyone was Darnell Nurse. Ol' Darryl has struggled mightily at points in the playoffs, but the reality is that the Oilers are going to need him if they're going to get back into this series. I personally believe that he's so much better than what we're getting from him right now, and I really hope he can find a way back there before it's too late.
