The Smurl family became famous in the late 1970s because they said their house in West Pittston, Pennsylvania was haunted. Jack and Janet Smurl and their four daughters claimed they experienced strange and scary things, like weird smells, creepy noises, and even physical attacks by spirits. The well-known paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren got involved and the whole story was written in a book called "The Haunted" and turned into a TV movie in 1991.
Some people doubt the Smurl family's story, thinking it might not be true. But others find it interesting and spooky, and the case is still discussed in the paranormal world. It's part of the ongoing conversation about whether ghosts and supernatural things are real or not.
