Raise your hand if you've ever thought you were supposed to treat Proverbs 31 like a checklist? Like special instructions on how to be the perfect woman and wife? Hold up - doesn't that strike you as weird? Christ set us free and check lists aren't the way we operate anymore. Let's look at Proverbs 31 with fresh eyes and recognize the valor of all women as God created them. *CAUTION: I do mention miscarriage and infant mortality during part of the historical discussion of women's roles/norms. We swim in a sea of patriarchy. As Elena Aguilar points out, we live and breathe and uphold the oppressive system, and rarely realize we're doing it. And patriarchy wants to suppress and invalidate emotion. So let's open our eyes a little bit, pray for clarity, and resist the oppressor by learning from our emotions instead of degrading them. Emotions are a natural, God-designed response to the world and people around us. And they're useful for alerting us when we have unmet needs. God is the only One able to meet all of our needs. Bringing our needs before Him is a beautiful, honest, and challenging process. Let's talk about it. Women are more emotional, right? More likely to break into hysterics and be completely irrational? Uhh, not so much. In today's episode we'll chat about how men and women are both gifted with emotions, yet how the hysterical women still haunts underlying beliefs and perceptions of women in today's society, including the church. We'll also talk microaggressions and how they look in society and church today. And let's not forget about all the emotions Jesus, the perfect human man, experienced while He walked the earth. We'll end with some practical applications and ways to support our sisters in Christ. Plus there might be an Office joke buried in there somewhere. Anyways, this is a big topic. One we'll need a few episodes to cover. So here's part one. Context matters. Knowing the culture and history of the time period of Paul's letters allows us to see things we wouldn't be able to see otherwise. It allows us to get into the heads of Paul's audience a bit. And, for me at least, it allows us to see why the household codes were revolutionary in a completely different way than we would expect in today's culture. I think a good place to start is with understanding the paterfamilias, the male heads of household who had control in a way we don't recognize today (thank God). Wait, is complementarian theology convincing? Sure, it's a commonly held theology and it's quite insisted upon by many influential men, but does it hold its weight? If you're like me and your formative Christian years were shaped by this theology, it's good to question why we so often tend to default to thinking complementarians must be right unless egalitarians can plead their case beyond a shadow of a doubt. But is that the right way to approach theology? Let's talk about it. Recently, I've been hearing and reading quite a few incorrect perceptions of what patriarchy is and how it manifests itself in the church. 1 28 - 5 Things I‘ve Learned About Gender Roles in the Home and Church So Far & Why Understanding Whether Complementarians or Egalitarians Are Right Matters 34:44
Gender roles. The topic that seems to haunt me. I've been struggling with whether gender roles in the home and church are Biblical since college (at least...maybe even a bit in high school). The topic just keeps coming up for me and I felt a few months ago that it was time to go all in and figure it out, if it can be figured out. In this process I've chatted with my friends and family to learn more about their opinions and see what they think of all the research I've been doing. It's been enlightening and several friends have asked for updates on what I'm learning. So here's part 1, a long-winded explanation of my formative thoughts on Christian gender roles. Please let me know if there's a related topic you want me to cover or research at podcasterkatherine@gmail.com . Let's talk about Eve! She's often talked about as the first sinner, the beginning of the Fall for humankind. And, yes, she sinned. I agree. And the consequences have been severe for all of humankind. But also, she was a human, a real person, the first woman. The first mother. Let's look beyond the sinner and see Eve as a whole person. Let's take an empathetic look at the first human giver of life. A special thanks to Margret Mowczko, whose work on the word "helper" in reference to Eve informed this episode. 1 26 - Mere Humans Make Pretty Disappointing Heroes; We Have the True Hero We‘re Looking for in Jesus 29:28
Today, we're taking another short break from our Women of the Bible Series to address making heroes out of mere humans. This includes: superhero-ing people, looking at certain professions as heroic, and having personal heroes beyond what's spiritually healthy for us. Of course there's nothing wrong with admiring people we love and look up to. Mentors are good and Biblical. However, when we think mere humans are perfect or see the flaws in people we hero-worship, we certainly run into trouble. And sometimes we don't see the flaws, including racism, and that leads to poisonous results as well. You've probably heard of Mary Magdalene before. There's all kinds of stories about her out there. So let's see what's actually true- what the Bible says about her. Through over a dozen mentions of her in all 4 gospels, it's clear that she's a committed disciple of Jesus who trusted her Savior and followed Him for the rest of her life once He healed her. Today, we'll look into her story from the first mention of her until right before the resurrection. In episode 24, we will read about her interactions with Jesus after He was crucified. According to Google, millennials are now aged 25-40 (as of 2021). So, we're aging! And sometimes that makes us feel like our lives are over or that we can't contribute anymore because we're not "young." But God can use anyone: young, old, or somewhere in the middle. And while we're on the topic, can we as a generation rise above the lack of love for Gen Z and the Boomers? Let's have some real talk about where we're at and how we can view and interact with members of other generation. And yes fellow Blink fans, I was tempted to name this episode "What's My Age Again?" 1 14 - Hannah: A Strong Woman Who Knew Grief & Poured Her Heart Out to God (Women of the Bible Series) 33:05
God uses women! He does! And I love the story of Hannah as a way to begin our series on women in the Bible. She loved God, was close to Him, poured out her pain and grief to Him, and was used by Him in the greater story of Israel. God remembers, loves, and uses women, my friend. And He remembers, loves, and will use you too. Join me as we dive into the story of Hannah this week. Key Bible Verses: 1 Samuel 1-2 *ALSO I accidentally say 2 Samuel instead of 1 Samuel 2 a few times. Face palm. I mean 1 Samuel 2. *** If this podcast has blessed you in some way, please consider leaving me a written review on Apple Podcasts. Have you ever been jealous of someone else's calling? Wished you were doing what they're doing or feeling badly about yourself because they're doing "more"? Today on the Revival Podcast for Millennial Women we're chatting about calling comparison. It's a sneaky little thought process that degrades the important work God has us doing in this season of life, even if that's resting. When Jesus talked to Peter about his future, Peter didn't exactly like what he heard. He looked at John and basically said "what about that guy"? Jesus responds "You follow me." And that's the rub, my friends. We're to follow Him on our journey independent of what everyone else is doing. Let's dig in. Revival Podcast for Millennial Women - Gospel Truths, Encouragement, & Personal Relationship Growth with God
Shame sucks. It feels like you have to hide and that the darkness just might consume you. It comes from our mistakes, our sin, and/or the actions of others that have negatively affected us. And it's hard to see the light when our shame threatens to overwhelm us. In this episode of the Revival Podcast for Millennial Women, we discuss shame, what it feels like, and how it can affect us. We feel like we can't fulfill our callings, that we're disqualified when we live in shame. But we are not condemned. We are new creations in Christ. And God has freedom from shame for us if we will go to Him. He wastes nothing, my friend. He will waste no experience, no hurt, no mistake. You are still called and He is still able to use you for His kingdom. He's with you always and works all things together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. So, let's step from the darkness to the light, let's uncover our shame before God, and experience the healing only He provides! Key Bible Verses: Romans 8 Note: If you're having trouble moving past your shame, consider seeking counseling or therapy. It can be so helpful to have someone helping you process your emotions and shame! *** If this podcast has blessed you in some way, please consider leaving me a written review on Apple Podcasts.
