When a young Eva Kollisch arrives as a refugee in New York in 1940, she finds a community among socialists who share her values and idealism. She soon discovers ‘the cause’ isn’t as idyllic as it seems. Little does she know this is the beginning of a lifelong commitment to activism and her determination to create radical change in ways that include belonging, love and one's full self. In addition to Eva Kollisch’s memoirs Girl in Movement (2000) and The Ground Under My Feet (2014), LBI’s collections include an oral history interview with Eva conducted in 2014 and the papers of Eva’s mother, poet Margarete Kolllisch, which document Eva’s childhood experience on the Kindertransport. Having spent all of her formative years in traditional schools, homeschooling was not very familiar to Ebi, at first. Along the way, her journey has afforded her many opportunities to lead in various learning environments as a tutor, teacher, and now co-founder of Noire Educators Collective (founded by Natasha Bettina) a non-profit and international support group that serves as a resource for Black and Brown families and educators alike, both traditional and home. A lifelong learner and teacher, Brenaea is a career educator who worked in public schools and coached pre-service teachers prior to launching The Melanin Village. Brenea knew she wanted to homeschool after her culminating undergraduate research at Princeton University highlighted the inaccurate portrayal of slavery and the Civil War in U.S. History textbooks. Annie Bell is a retired Independent Financial Advisor who also founded Wealth Management Ministries, Inc. where they endeavor to bridge the gap between the rich and poor through teach financial literacy to the people in the underdeveloped communities and the youth. After several years in operation, she was led to create another arm of the ministry to help prevent and abolish child abuse and sex trafficking called Prevention Works. Through that arm, she also started a radio show, authored a book and advocated for victims who have no voice. As serial business owners, her and her husband opened Habakkuk books (self-publishing company), Pneuma Desigz (graphic design company), Dream Vacation Depot (boutique travel agency) and Tackle N’ Travel (travel blog). Leaving a career as a motivational trainer with Los Angeles County Office of Education was a difficult decision. In June 2007 Angela Phillips decided to do just that after having recently married and giving birth to the first of a new crew of children she affectionately calls her “littles”. Having been a single mom raising 3 children while pursuing a career; she decided this would be a completely new and different chapter in her life. Angela is now mom of 6 offspring age 34 yrs old to 9 The idea of homeschooling was introduced to her by a Sister in her spiritual fellowship. She incorporates her motivational style and experience as a seasoned trainer into her educational activities and believes travel and cultural experiences are just as important for her children as curriculum choice. Angela combines workbooks, project learning, field trips and interest lead learning to create an eclectic approach to her children’s education. This amazing Mom has recently authored and released a book about her experiences as a single mom entitled, “The Care and Feeding of the Single Mother." Currently Angela appears as a panelist on the radio show “Under The Palm: Hebrew Women Speak."
