×Helen Hayes took a summer trip to Perisher, a ski resort in New South Wales to learn about the mountain's latest attraction for winter 2025 - a new six-chair ski lift that will improve the capacity of the mountain and the skier's experience.
West Australian reporter Carmen Jenner has also been away, this time to Laos and Thailand – interestingly both countries have had issues with illegal alcohol production in some rural locations that have killed or seriously injured travellers. We’ll see what Carmen felt safe to drink over there.
Recently on the show we featured the musical theatre shows Melbourne has lined up for the rest of 2025. It was very well received by our audience and while it did include some of the shows being staged in Sydney, that was not the full list – tonight we present the unabridged Sydney music theatre scene, the names of the theatres and the dates they will play. Karin Avila knows the speed of a New York minute – she lived and worked in the Big Apple before moving to Spain two years ago where it is commonly said – “A Spaniard never looks at his watch”. The Spanish approach to time, to punctuality, to the siesta and to meal time, being about two hours later than we expect - has ramifications for the unwary traveller. So Graeme Kemlo asked Karin if it was true that she had to adjust from one extreme approach to time to the opposite in her newly adopted home in rural Valencia Spain.…
Helen Hayes has been a regular visitor to Canada particularly during their winter, but recently she travelled across the country from west to east, ending up in Quebec, the predominantly French speaking province. It is an accident of history we gather, but we’re wondering just how French is this enclave on the North American continent. Does it extend beyond the language to the architecture, the food, the wine and the attitude.…
Our reporter/photographer Fiona Harper documents her recent slow travel experience pedalling along the Spice Roads of Sri Lanka. Fiona rode up to 60 km a day, but she's particularly fit (marathon fit) so she enjoyed it immensely. Read more from Fiona and check out her photography at: fionaharper.com.au…

1 Spain correspondent Karin Avila updates us on aftermath of deadly Valencia floods -Graeme Kemlo 14:40
Karin Avila is US-born but has been living in the province of Valencia on Spain’s east coast for the past couple of years. While she was unaffected by the floods that raced through parts of her province, killing more than 200 people, she is aware friom friends and neighbours that almost everyone knows someone who has lost their home, their car, their business or their life as the flood waters carried away everything in their path. But what has happened since. Graeme Kemlo spoke with Karin overnight to get the latest. At the weekend Karin said about 100,000 protesters marched to the centre of Valencia to demand the resignation of Carlos Mazon over the government's inadequate response. In a subsequent update Karin wrote: With emotions from dismay to optimism, Valencia continues to recover from devastating floods. While many areas, like Catarroja, still face challenges, the city centre is operational, including the fast train to Madrid. Cultural spots, restaurants and shops welcome visitors, and Albufera’s famous paella rice fields are partially open. Recent protests, drawing tens of thousands, highlight the community’s determination to hold the government accountable and rebuild. At the same time, Valencia’s marathon brought together 35,000 participants, showcasing the city’s resilience and providing a much-needed boost to the local economy. Travellers are welcome to enjoy the city and should remain aware of ongoing recovery efforts. Photo crecit Jose Anngel,X…
Who knew that you could board a ship in Outer Harbour Adelaide and then cruise South Australian waters for 10 days and find plenty to see and do. Well it surprised local Carolyne Jasinski who was amazed at the geographic features on islands near SA and also on the mainland. She loved every minute of it as you can tell from her chat with Graeme Kemlo. And NO, that ship is not on the rocks - but it can get close in to many locations so you can get ashore as they did every day, sometimes twice a day. So here’s a different type of “cruise” - a train cruise along a score of bucket-list journeys like the spice route and the silk road. Helen Hayes talks to Megan Bardsley from Golden Eagle Luxury Private train cruises. Photo supplied: The Madras Mail between Hyderabad and Mumbai
Helen Hayes, clearly a fan of the live stage musical and I know there’s a bit of a turf war between Sydney and Melbourne as to who can get the big musicals first. Helen adds her city's musicals to Graeme's rundown for 2025, We tell listeners who do appreciate this theatre form what they can expect to see and when in Melbourne’s fabulous traditional live theatre venues that this city loves to fill. Last week we presented our definitive guide to travel-related Christmas shopping and gift giving. This week in part 2, our tag team of Helen Hayes and Carolyne Jasinski wrestle with the best of books to slide under your tree. And of course other family activities such as board games count too.
