Eastern Ladakh Imbroglio: Emergency Procurement Powers for Armed Forces

The situation in Eastern Ladakh and the bellicosity of our Northern neighbour has led to the government approving the Emergency Procurement powers by the armed forces once again. These powers have been welcomed by both the forces and the defence industry, as was more than evident during the India Defence Conclave hosted by bharatshakti.in in October 2021.

However, are such powers really a long-term solution for our defence equipment procurement? Will these powers prove useful in terms of sustained capability building? Shouldn’t all contingencies be thought off earlier in the day, and requisite procurement is undertaken to ensure the security of our interests.

The General retired as the Director-General Weapons and Equipment, AHQ. Currently, he is a Consultant with DRDO. He is a Fellow of the Indian Institution of Engineers and is an Advisor/Subject Expert with the UPSC. He is also an Adjunct Faculty at IIT Delhi, visiting faculty at Rashtriya Raksha University.
