In this lesson we will practice two more vowel sounds.

First /ʊ/, the sound in words like

good
stood
book

And then the sound /u:/ in words like

moon
boot
soon

Part One: Listen to the following sentences with the /ʊ/ sound:

  1. That’s a good cookbook.
  2. I would like to buy a wool jacket.
  3. Take a look at this hook.
  4. Please put the wood over there.
  5. The soldier stood at attention.
  6. She should have come earlier.

Part Two: Now let’s practice with the /u:/ sound.

  1. This boot is loose.
  2. The goose got loose.
  3. A hammer is a tool. A saw is too.
  4. You never see the moon at noon.
  5. Please come home soon.

Part Three: Some words with both sounds:

Schoolbook.
I lost my favorite schoolbook.

Footstool
He stood on a footstool to reach the top shelf.

Bulletproof
The policeman wore a bulletproof vest.

Extra Listening Practice:

He got soot on his suit.
He pulled his friend into the pool.

Extra slow: schoolbook……..footstool………..bulletproof…………..

Over the years linguists have created an international phonetic alphabet (IPA) to help them record the sounds of the world's languages. Yesterday I found this wonderful interactive chart for the American English IPA and I wanted to share the link with you.
