Sue Nelson is an award-winning businesswoman, author, broadcaster and speaker.
She founded the multiple award-winning Breakthrough Funding, which was sold to EY (Ernst and Young) in 2020. The company won the coveted Independent Tax Consultancy Firm in the UK 2019 at the Tolley Awards for its role in gaining over £60 million of funding for innovative UK start-ups. She was awarded the Kent Business Woman of the Year in 2017 and the London and South East Director of the Year 2019 by the Institute of Directors.
She is a highly experienced interviewee both on national radio and television and has appeared on every national television and radio news programme in the UK from CNN, Sky News, Radio 5 Live and Radio 4’s Today Programme to The Culture Show, BBC Breakfast, The Politics Show and The Food Programme. Having been interviewed by Nicky Campbell, John Humphrys, Jon Snow, Tony Wilson, Gordon Burns, Kirsty Young, Sir Trevor McDonald and even Ann Widdecombe and Edwina Currie amongst many others.

And now she’s on my little podcast. 😉

You can see more on her and her work at https://www.suenelson.uk/ .

I went into the podcast knowing very little about what was going to happen, but I knew that both Sue and the title of the episode made me want to do this thing. I think it was a great decision, and hope that you do too!

So, how do you go from zero to hero in five years? Well, in Sue’s case, you start by gambling £350k that you can do just that. Funding goes to less than 5% of women founders, so getting a loan was not going to happen. And Sue then reels off a range of statistics about women in business which are, frankly, shocking. But I do find out where to attribute a statistic that I often quote!

Surprisingly (to me), “If you want to make loads of money, don’t do something you love” is Sue’s advice when you’re consider what business to start. Counterintuitive? Perhaps, but she makes a good argument – it needs to be about having a business case that works.

You’ll have to listen in to hear where Sue went from there, finishing up definitely not as a zero, but as a hero.
