A common story for new Christians goes something like this: at a desperate time in their life, they met Jesus! He delivered them from their sin. They enjoyed newly found freedom, new friendships, and a more abundant life. The future looks bright. And then.…those old sinful habits come knocking with a vengeance. In a moment of weakness, they experience failure, then guilt, then despair. They they get stuck, grow discouraged, and live in confusion. What is going on! It is precisely at that point that the Apostle Paul’s teaching in Romans chapter 7 helps us.
