Eye of the Tigers: LSU in control of their College Football Playoff future
Manage episode 375787036 series 3507519
The second College Football Playoff rankings of the season are out and there's an interesting situation developing with No. 7 LSU. The Tigers have two losses overall, but they control their destiny to reach the SEC championship game. A win there against No. 1 Georgia could make for a strong case to be part of the semifinals. Should that scenario unfold, it would come at the expense of Tennessee, which already has a dominating win at LSU this season.
Alabama and Clemson fell on the same day and both dropped out of the top six. It's the first time that's happened in the nine years of the rankings. Is there reason to worry about the future of the Crimson Tide and how they move forward as Nick Saban gets closer to the end of his tenure? And what about the Tigers? Does their insular approach create concern whether Dabo Swinney will win another national title?
The Pac-12 is firmly in the playoff mix and Oregon will have a strong case should the Ducks finish with just one loss. Also lurking is Southern California. Even though the Trojans don't have a strong resume or defense, they do have Caleb Williams, who might be the best quarterback in college football.
Dan Wolken and Paul Myerberg address all these storylines and look ahead to the biggest matchups in Week 6 during the latest version of College Football Fix, the USA TODAY Sports weekly podcast that releases every Tuesday during the season.
