Alvin said, "I have two daughters and six grand kids. In my career I’ve done everything there is to do in my career. I used to teach mobility. I was superintendent of the Illinois visually handicapped, that’s the rehab center in Chicago. I’ve held about ever job there is. I even tried to drive a truck...
This interview was conducted August 23, 1999 – Alvin was 69 years old – his life growing up on a farm during WWII, going to school mostly without access to braille. Although he was born just 12 years after Braille was adopted as the official way for blind people to communicate in 1918, it had not yet percolated to Illinois school textbooks. He built a life rich in family, he taught, was a leader and gave back to his community. His story shows the capacity of people born with a disability – who do succeed in spite of the lack of effective tools. But as he pointed out, he was very glad to finally get a long cane, he was very glad to teach rehabilitation so that he could learn and use the skills to enhance his life and the lives of others.
