We're at the new Studio B Podcast Studios. Our Host, Rodney Medina talks with David G. Keith about his journey into becoming a best-selling author as well as his previous career with the Oxnard Police Department.
During this podcast, David talks about his career, one that spanned nearly thirty years, and served as the perfect springboard into his writing career. When David retired in 2011 he had no plans to write anything; but rather enjoy a retirement of golf, travel and time with family. Then, while driving on a Los Angeles freeway, he had a close call with a 18 wheeler truck and his writing career began! David tells the story of how all this transpired in a fascinating look at the writing process. One that took him to a first novel, published in 2015; to six additional novels currently.
While with the Oxnard Police Department David started the “first in the nation” community policing television show titled Street Beat. The program began in 1985 and ran for more than two decades; televised each week into the homes of Oxnard residents where David would discuss various crimes that had taken place in the city, and how not to be victimized. The show won many awards, locally and nationally; and was profiled on national news stories by both Sam Donaldson and Walter Cronkite.
In 2008, a year after Street Beat ended, David created Straight To You, another program that helped educate Oxnard residents. STY was conceived after David heard about YouTube from his son. The technology that would allow anyone to upload content for the world to see gave David the idea to create what came to be known as ‘webcasts’, viewable on any phone or computer. The webcasts, again the first produced by any police department, featured David as the on-camera spokesperson discussing crimes that had just occurred. David would record the webcast from the crime scene, offering to the viewers the facts of the case. Straight To You was received very well by both the community and the news media. More than 450 webcasts were produced, offering the public firsthand insights no police department had ever offered before. YouTube views ranged from a few hundred per webcast to as high as 2 million views. David G. Keith was truly a pioneer in his field.
Please join Rodney and David as they explore this fascinating story of behind the scenes policing and the birth of a novelist.
