In this segment, Dr. Claire Unis explains what narrative medicine is and the reasons behind her book, Balance Pedal Breathe. We all can find a balance in our daily routine, pedal towards our destiny, and breathe to combat stressors.

WHO IS DR. CLAIRE?

Claire Unis MD MFA is a board-certified practicing pediatrician who brings her love of writing, as well as her understanding of every individual's need for personal expression, to her work as a communication coach and teacher of fellow clinicians in her medical group. Her work has been published in a number of journals, and she recently published "Balance, Pedal, Breathe: a Journey through Medical School", a book about drawing on diverse experiences to retain compassion while becoming a doctor. She is now working on extending narrative medicine practices to patients and other medical staff, in addition to clinicians.

DR. CLAIRE'S CALL TO ACTION

Our medical system is broken and too often puts doctors and patients at odds with one another instead of on the same team. My goal is to use literature and writing to reconnect clinicians with their sense of purpose, and ultimately also to help them better connect with patients.
