The War and Treaty’s Michael and Tanya Trotter grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, and Washington, DC, respectively, but both have family roots in the South. They also grew up in the musical traditions of their churches – Tanya in the Black Baptist Church and Michael in the Seventh Day Adventist Church – where they learned the power of song to move people. After becoming a father at a very young age, Michael eventually joined the armed forces and served in Iraq and Germany, where he took up songwriting as a way of dealing with his experiences there. Meanwhile Tanya embarked on a singing and acting career after a breakthrough appearance in Sister Act 2 alongside Whoopi Goldberg and Lauryn Hill. Now, after a long and sometimes traumatic journey, Michael and Tanya are married, touring, winning all sorts of awards, and set to release their fifth album together, and their fourth as The War and Treaty. Sid talks to Michael and Tanya about the new record, Plus One , as well as their collaboration with Miranda Lambert, what it was like to record at FAME studios in Muscle Shoals, and how they’re blending country, soul, gospel, and R&B. Ya girls took a daycation to get away from all the *gestures wildly* in our hometowns. Mystic, CT had just what we needed: All the lobster, wine, scenic landscapes, records galore, and local shenanigans. Disclaimer, we did not go to Mystic Pizza, as the restaurant is good for a lot of things, but their pizza is mediocre at best. In short, we got a little taste of everything. Abbotts Lobster in The Rough ( https://www.abbottslobster.com/ ) provided a much needed lobster feast that we definitely did not regret. Since we went in the middle of the week, we enjoyed our wine-down Wednesday at Jonathan Edwards Winery ( https://www.jedwardswinery.com/ ), and a sweet treat at the original Mystic Drawbridge Ice Cream ( http://www.mysticdrawbridgeicecream.com/ ). After filling our bellies, we took a stroll down Main St. to take in the local tourist scene, checked out the Army and Navy Store, and bought a ton of records from Mystic Disc ( http://mysticdisclp.com/ ). Sadly, it was not Stanley, but that is hopefully not the end of celeb sightings this summer for these two! Another thing that is on our minds… Is our podcast scaring away potential relationships we might have? Do guys we talk to on dating apps listen and then decide “Nah”? The best time to record a podcast is definitely right after brunch... Said no one ever. After a hectic week, Keli gushes about her new apartment, and Kim shares her obsession with the new puppy in her life. The main event of this episode was to discuss the broadway show, Hamilton, one of Kim's all-time favorites, and Keli's new discovery of this amazing piece of art. There are many homages to other pop/rap/hip hop artists and a lot of little easter eggs that are thrown in that only add to the brilliance of Lin-Manuel Miranda's masterpiece. We'll let you use one of our Disney+ accounts to watch, because that's how good it is.... Black Lives Matter. There’s no “if”, “and”, or “but” about it. This week we address the systemic racism that has gone on too long in this country and the world. Black citizens are constantly being beaten, tortured, harassed and murdered by people in positions of power all over the world, in the middle of the night and in broad daylight. If you feel uncomfortable with what we’re saying, don’t complain to us; instead, we encourage you to educate yourselves and others. Only then can you be an ally, and contribute to change that, quite frankly, is hundreds of years overdue. We'll be continuously sharing resources for you to get involved and learn how to support Black communities, artists, businesses, voices, and other organizations committed to creating permanent change during this movement. Use your privilege and your voice to stand up to injustice. Help push our government and local law enforcement to hold their officers to the same standards they expect from the rest of the people living in this country. “With great power, comes great responsibility.” they need to be responsible for their actions, and if they abuse that power, they should be held accountable, plain and simple.
