Welcome to the Warship Tactics Podcast Episode 014 Destroyers Part 1 Overview I’m Your host Maddminister In the Warship Tactics Podcast I discuss tactics and tips to help you improve your World of Warships game play Now let’s jump into the action Imperial Japanese Navy Destroyers, pure torpedo boats Japanese destroyers want to stay hidden all the time to make use of the torpedo systems they have. Gun power in the main tech tree line is weak, slow turret traverse and slow re-load times make using the guns risky in a lot of situations. Normally it’s better to hold fire and stay concealed as Japanese smoke is below average in duration and number of charges available. The torpedoes have the highest damage output at every tier, they also have the longest ranges. Torpedoes are the focus for the Japanese main destroyer line. The down side to IJN torpedoes is the bad detection range, alert enemy captains will have plenty of time to dodge incoming salvos. At tier 5 the IJN destroyer line splits and introduces more gun focused ships. The gun boats get fewer torpedoes with longer re-load times, but have a better Torpedo Reload Booster consumable. Let’s go over the tier 5 split into the gun boat style destroyers. Key for a gun boat destroyer is maneuverability, speed, turret travers and re-load time. The IJN gun boats are somewhat lacking in these categories. The Minekaze has good detection range and very good speed at this tier (39 knots) the guns are lackluster. 4x120mm guns with 8.1km range, 30 second turret travers and over 10 second re-load is nothing to write home about. It’s tier 5, you won’t be in this ship long. The Hatsuharu at tier 6 suffers the same problems as the Minekaze. Slow turret travers and re-load times. They do have good initial shell velocity of 915 meters per second, making it easy to hit targets at max range. 36.5 knots with a 3.4 second rudder shift time is good making dodging and weaving to avoid incoming fire. You will not be able to keep your guns on target when dancing, so avoid knife fights at all cost. The Shiratsuyu at tier 7 is another lackluster gun boat based on gun stats. In the maneuverability department, its decent at 35.7 knots and 2.5 second rudder shift time you can bob and weave when needed. The 27.6 second turret travers speed will keep you from wining most knife fights. The 10 km torpedoes in 2x4 launchers paired with the Torpedo Reload Booster make this a good torpedo boat. I have fun in this ship, but it takes some work and you need to stay on top of the cool down on the reload booster to get the most out of it. The Akizuki fits the hybrid gun boat mold better than the previous 3 ships. Problem is the slow speed of 33 knots and average rudder shift time of 6.5 seconds make this ship hard to take into close range battle. The guns have a 3 second reload which fits the gun fighter mold, but 100mm guns make it hard to score consistent damage. You must fully understand how and what to shoot to make these guns perform. This is the ship that got hit the hardest when stealth firing was removed, IMO, anyway. In the torpedo line, I will only go over 1 ship, the Shimakaze. It’s the reason you will grind this line of ships. Slender boat that does 39 knots with a 3 second rudder shift time makes it very slippery. The guns although slow turning and loading are surprisingly effective when used at the proper times. But the Shimakaze is all about the torpedoes. 3 sets of 5 each give you that famous wall of torpedoes that players still rage about. Shimakaze torpedoes hit like a freight train. You get 3 different sets to choose from, the stock type 93’s, type 93 mod 3’s and type F3. Don’t use the type 93’s, sure 20 km range looks good on paper but you will get better results using the type 93 mod 3’s. The F3’s are fast but the short range make them very situational. You can and should contest capture points in the Shimakaze, even waiting for the initial torpedo load, get into a capture point. You have good detectability range and very good maneuverability. A trick to keep your identity hidden is to use your torpedoes in salvoes of 2 launchers keeping 1 in reserve just in case. But feel free to use all 15 if you have a great ambush set up. Remember to keep spotting and screening the fleet when waiting for your torpedoes to reload. Don’t be that Shimakaze captain who runs off to the edge of the map waiting for the torpedoes to reload, effectively doing nothing for 2 minutes. The Shima is a very capable scout ship. United States Navy Destroyers, the hybrid gun boats. American destroyers are the gangsters of the destroyers, they want to get up close and personal to shoot you in the face. Fast firing guns in quick-turning turrets pump out the damage in close knife fights. At the higher tiers, the torpedo systems become very dangerous and will supplement your damage very nicely. They also have good anti-aircraft firepower with access to the Defensive AA Fire consumable, starting at tier 5 they can perform fleet escort duties when needed. Smoke, that sweet USN smoke, longest lasting in the game. USN destroyers can easily conceal 3 or 4 large ships inside their smoke screens. The Benson, Fletcher and Gearing are very good hybrid gun/torpedo boats. They lean more on the guns, but still play the torpedo boat role very good. Good detectability range make it easy to enter capture points unseen. The Gearing and Fletcher will push out a Shimakaze from capture points just because they see it. In the USN destroyer line you get one of the best premium captain trainers in the game, the USS Sims. You only get 4 127’s on the Sims but they are tier 9 Fletcher guns on a tier 7 ship. A base 2.7 second rudder shift time and 500 meter turning circle make the Sims a knife fighting master. How can this ship possibly be balanced? The torpedoes are low damage and slow running, even scoring multiple hits will leave ships alive and kicking. The torpedoes are better used as area denial weapons, put them in the water often. When you decide to go down the USN destroyer line you are accepting an early life of yolo rushing to get off torpedo attacks. But good maneuverability makes this tactic survivable and super fun in the low tiers. You will always have the best smoke, abuse it every chance you get. Learn to use that smoke for teammates, battleships, cruisers and RU destroyers will get more bang from your smoke than you will. Lay smoke, then spot and screen for torpedoes. USN destroyers are fleet support ships, communicate what you intend to do with your team. Benson, Fletcher and Gearing should not hump landmasses, get away from island into open water to spot for the big boys. The Nicholas and Farragut will find themselves hugging island to get off ambush torpedo attacks and to get into telephone booth fights. Take the captain skill Last Stand, nothing to discuss, it’s mandatory. You will be in knife fights and everything will get broken multiple times a game, last stand will save your ship. I have no idea what is going through the minds of people who take USN destroyers into battle without last stand. Russian Destroyers, Pure Gun Boats Let’s talk about the two tier 10 ships quickly first. RU – Grozovoi It’s the Hybrid Gun Boat, but more gun focused, it has average torpedoes with a long re-load, it’s also fast like all Russian destroyers, but the ship is very large and not armored like the Khabarovsk. RU – Khabarovsk Pure gun boat, fast-fast-fast, great main battery range, great rate of fire, more of a small cruiser, poor torpedoes, terrible surface detectability, worst team support destroyer, you must be comfortable being spotted when using this ship, it also has below average maneuverability and will struggle to take capture points early and mid-game. At 7 kilometers and farther it will dominate USN destroyers in gun fights. The Khabarovsk is a dodge tanking ship. The Russian destroyers are pure gun boats that dominate at the long to mid-range gun fights. High velocity fast firing guns make it easy to hit targets at near max range and set fires with relative ease. The AP power also makes it possible to citadel cruisers and aircraft carriers in the right situation. They are the fastest destroyers in the game but suffer with rudder shift times and larger turning circles compared to other destroyers. They are not going to sneak into capture points early in the game, with the worst surface detection ranges of all destroyers. Medium to slow turret travers speed will make them suffer in close range knife fights with USN destroyers, but you should avoid this situation as a Russian destroyer captain. With torpedo systems that only reach 10km at best you will rarely set up torpedo attacks over using your guns. When you do set up a torpedo attack the 65-knot speed and better will make it hard for your targets to dodge them. Think of the tier 8 to 10 ships as small light cruisers, even the supposed hybrid ships. From 8 to 10 kilometers you can’t go wrong with Russian destroyers. Dodge tanking is a term you will become familiar with playing them. Of all the ships that get under the skin of battleship drivers, the Russian destroyers top this list. Arsonist, Confederate and High Caliber are achievements you will attain often in these ships. Russian destroyers are not the stealthy sneaky ships like their counterparts. Open water gunnery moving at full speed is the bread and butter of the Russian destroyer line. If you are not comfortable being constantly spotted in a destroyer then the Russians ships are not for you. Although you should not be going for early game capture points in most games, you can still back up other destroyers in the capture points. Try and keep most of the capture point in range of your guns and let the stealthier ships spot for you. Team up with a USN or German destroyer to really pour on the damage output and dominate a capture points. Ignore those people on your team who tell you to contest capture points at the beginning of games. Sometime team composition will dictate you do contest capture points, it rare. That is not your ships strength. German Destroyers, hybrid torpedo boats with fast re-load KMS – Z52 AP power, German Hydro-Acoustic Search, capture point bully, Fast torpedo re-load time, low torpedo damage, weak vs CV, short duration smoke The German destroyers are a mix of USN and Russian destroyers at the higher tiers. The V-25, G-101 and V-170 are just super fun to play. The forward firing torpedoes are a blast to use and the fast re-load times are nearly unbelievable. The T-22 at tier 5 give you a ship that is tied for the fastest rate of fire in the tier. At tier 6 you get the Ernst Gaede and access to 150mm guns. But the true perk to the Ernst Gaede is access to Hydro Acoustic Search on the B hull, the German destroyer trade mark. This is a ship you will train a separate captain for if you plan on keeping it. Tier 7 gets you into the Leberecht Maass. This ship will be very familiar if you have played USN and Russian destroyers. Here we get the classic Fletcher gun layout, 5 single mounts that is very versatile. The drawback here is the slow turret travers that makes knife fighting a borderline bad idea. The Maass has the highest health for destroyers in tier 7, yes more than Leningrad and Blyskawica. Also, here we get very capable torpedoes with good speed and damage. Surface detectability is between the US and Russian boats, but smoke and Hydro acoustic search make up for this. The Maass is a true capture point bully. The Z-23 and Z-46 keep with the same theme as the Maass, good guns, good health and good torpedoes. The Z-52 is why you grind this line. Fast firing guns and good turret travers speed make close quarters fights comfortable. Main battery range is the best of all destroyers at 16.8-kilometers max, sorry Khab. The anti-aircraft fire power is on par with some cruisers without having to spec into it. Good speed and acceleration makes this a true smoke fighter when paired with hydro acoustic search. And yes, the real power of the Z-52 is that 5.88 km hydro acoustic search that lasts 122 seconds. Keep in mind torpedo detection is 4.02km, ship detection is 5.88km. Some say the German destroyers with hydro acoustic search are the best capture point bullies, even out classing the USN destroyers. In my opinion they are equal, as a good USN captain knows how to negate the hydro acoustic search and take advantage of the short duration smoke. But, German destroyers live and die inside or very close to capture points. They make excellent picket ships for the fleet and dangerous to aircraft. Get your torpedoes into the water often, even if only area denial tools. The fast re-load time makes this a very effective technique for controlling choke points and capture points. When you decide to play destroyers, you have made the choice to carry your team more times than not. You have made the decision to protect the fleet at the cost of your personal stats. A few final thoughts: Don’t pass judgment on the Royal Navy battleships yet, take them out for a spin when they become available to us normal players. Even with some of the community contributors showing some dissatisfaction with the Royal Navy battleships. Remember each of us will play ships slightly different and use their unique quirks differently. Destroyer captains, play the objectives instead of chasing kills and damage. Even the Russian destroyers are better at taking capture points than cruisers. Last thing. Torpedoes in the water are nobodies friend, remember that.
